Radcliffe Bailey, the acclaimed visual artist whose paintings, sculptures and mixed media highlighted the memories and narratives of Black life in dazzling imagination and detail, has died after a battle with brain cancer, according to reports. He was 54. For the better part of the last 30 years, Bailey, who passed away on November 15,…
Hip-hop is no longer just for the young, especially on the cusp of celebrating the 50-year anniversary of DJ Kool Herc’s August 1973 block party in The Bronx that’s recognized as the origin of the genre. With advancing age sometimes comes maturity and, often, moments of celebration. In the case of Atlanta’s hip-hop community, emerging…
(Editor’s note: We begin our new “Creative in Residence” series of guest editors today with Floyd Hall, a prominent writer, producer and documentarian. A story generated from Hall’s residency will be published each Thursday for the next four weeks.) :: We often only know the past because we invent it; we only know the future…
I often struggle with the words to contextualize the uncertainty that’s been present during the past 12 weeks while in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the curious effects of being afforded a moment to sit still and sheltered — albeit a traumatic luxury — for so long is the constant attention directed…

For many, Art Basel represents the pinnacle…
Drab beige façades cover the mostly shuttered storefronts at Westgate Shopping Center. Just a smattering of traffic clusters around the meat and seafood market or the liquor store at opposite ends of the expansive property. Situated at the corner of Campbellton and Mt. Gilead Roads, the site primarily serves as an easy passthrough for drivers…
If we could rank artists by their ability to start and shift conversations about America’s most divisive issues — sex, politics, guns and media culture, to name a few — near the top of that list would be a disproportionate number of artists with strong ties to Atlanta. This may sound like an outlandish claim…
The cable TV show Atlanta has returned for its second season on FX, a highly anticipated comeback after a critically acclaimed debut that netted Golden Globe Award wins for the series (Best Musical or Comedy TV Series) and show creator/lead actor Donald Glover (Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy TV Series). It was a…
