Your Source For The Arts In Atlanta

Currently at the High Museum, Black is the Day, Black is the Night is Los Angeles-based photographer Amy Elkins’ exploration of the long-term psychological effects of incarceration and solitary confinement.

Elkins corresponded with incarcerated men over the course of several years and based her images on these exchanges. Since photography isn’t allowed in prisons, the artist sought imaginatively to capture the interior landscapes evoked by the correspondence.

The small exhibition, running through March 4, includes seven photographs from the series alongside letters and ephemera written by the incarcerated men.
