Your Source For The Arts In Atlanta

The judges of the Suzi Bass Awards have spoken, and the top play and musical of the 2008-2009 Atlanta theater season were Theatre in the Square’s “A Man for All Seasons” (top photo) and Theatrical Outfit’s “Big River” (second photo).

Atlanta’s marquee professional theater honors, the local equivalent of Broadway’s Tony Awards, were handed out Monday night at Oglethorpe University’s Conant Performing Arts Center.

Theatre in the Square and Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company took home the most Suzis — with four each. Some of the city’s most distinguished actors received a silver star statue-ette named for Suzi Bass, a beloved Atlanta actress who died of melanoma in 2002.

Among them were John Ammerman (“A Man for All Seasons,” at left), Donna Biscoe (“A Cool Drink A Water,” lower photo, in white dress), Tom Key (“Big River”) and Tim McDonough (“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” with birthday cake).

Atlanta playwright Janece Shafer won the Gene-Gabriel Moore Playwriting Award for “Managing Maxine,” produced by the Alliance Theatre. Moore, who passed away last year, founded the Suzis, now in their fifth year.
