Sue Schroeder of Core Dance brings artists from Poland to perform in Atlanta

Core Dance Artistic Director Sue Schroeder has spent a lot of time in Poland this year and last, working with artists from there and from other European countries. Now, at Schroeder’s invitation, two Polish artists are in Atlanta as artists in residence. They will present an adaptation of their work Anatomies on Thursday, November 16, at 6:30 p.m. at the Core Dance studios in Decatur.

Katarzyna Pastuszak and Natalia Chylinska of Teatr Amareya will present the work during Core Dance’s salon event. They describe Anatomies as playing with the convention of the anatomy lesson, questioning whose eye is looking and what kind of landscape it creates with its gaze.

Pastuszak and Chylinska are from Gdańsk, Poland. They have worked with Schroeder on several projects, including the award-winning dancefilm Home (by Schroeder and Adam Larsen), and they attended the U.S. premiere of the work last weekend at the Houston Cinema Arts Festival.

Schroeder believes that by inviting artists such as Pastuszak and Chylinska to Atlanta and giving them space to explore and present new work, the community as a whole is enriched. “Understanding is built through conversation and personal experiences, and, in today’s world, ongoing, challenging arts conversations are vitally needed,” Schroeder says.

She describes salons as incubators where ideas are conceived, gestated and hatched, cultivating creativity, reviving the art of conversation and fueling energy to change the world.
