Your Source For The Arts In Atlanta

On Wednesday, February 28, Atlanta-based nonprofit dance organization Moving in the Spirit inked the paperwork that finalizes a planned move to a new home at the Edgewood/Candler Park MARTA Station.

In 2015, MARTA and Atlanta developer Columbia Ventures selected Moving in the Spirit as a community arts anchor for their new transit-oriented development at the Edgewood/Candler Park rail station. Moving in the Spirit’s future home will be the centerpiece of the mixed-use project, which will transform a former parking lot into housing, greenspace and the facility for dance.

“As our programs grew in depth and capacity, we realized our beloved facility of 20 years at GlenCastle would no longer meet the needs of our evolving organization,” wrote Dana Marie Lupton, CEO & cofounder of Moving in the Spirit, in a statement announcing the move on the organization’s website published Friday afternoon. “Together with our families, staff and stakeholders, we envisioned a space in which our young people could truly soar.”

Elizabeth O’Neill (Interim CEO, MARTA), Jaimie Hardin (Board Chair, Moving in the Spirit), Dillon Baynes (Managing Partner, Columbia Ventures) and Genene Stewart (CFO, Moving in the Spirit) sign the lease on Wednesday, February 28, 2018

Moving in the Spirit is an award-winning creative youth development program that uses dance to teach young people “the social, emotional and cognitive skills they need to thrive.” The new state-of-the-art home, designed by renowned architects Perkins+Will, will allow the organization to double enrollment, from 250 to 500 students.

“Positioned directly next to the MARTA rail line,” said Lupton, “the facility will meet the community’s need for transit-accessibility and broaden our reach to an additional 15,000 families each year through performances and workshops in our 150-seat theater, which will also serve as vital resource for Atlanta’s professional dance community.”

A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for late 2018. In the meantime and during construction, Moving in the Spirit will continue operating at its temporary location in the J.D. Sims Recreation Center in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward.
