I am uplifted by the ancestors who have come, who are here, who have never left. My work reclaims their stories as resistance and upholds their example to empower my people today and for generations to come.
I am driven by the history and narratives of my people which are oftentimes diminished or erased, misrepresented and/or manipulated by others to further hierarchies of power and oppression. Racism.
I see this often when working in communities where generational wealth or influence (and therefore resources) are reserved only for those empowered to enforce these oppressive systems. Social symbolism plays deeply into this process. Confederate monuments are an example of this assertion of power at the erasure or demise of our people. The resulting racism is pervasive and it creates the very environment in this society which breeds emboldened bigotry today.
In times like these, when we are separated by necessity, ArtsATL is needed more than ever. Please consider a donation so we can continue to highlight Atlanta’s creative community.
