Video: Fiesta de Libros, a new community project, encourages young readers
Laura Murvartian came to the U.S. from Mexico as an illegal immigrant. During her childhood, she worked the night shift in chicken processing plants alongside her father. The first in her family to earn a college degree, she became a citizen and a successful businesswoman. (Click to listen to her Storycorps interview).
Now she is now giving back.
Murvartian founded “Fiesta de Libros,” a book exchange program, to nurture young readers. The book festival, which takes place on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Plaza Fiesta, provides the opportunity for children to read the books arrayed in bins and to exchange books to take home. The program is run by volunteers — want to practice your Spanish? — and is always looking for book donations.
