What to see, do and hear: Photography at the High, love and sex at Horizon Theatre and more

Photographer Tyler Mitchell grew up in Atlanta, bought his first camera in ninth grade and made videos of the city’s skateboarding culture. Now, after making history in 2018 as the first Black photographer to shoot a Vogue cover — his subject was Beyoncé — and launching a career in fashion photography, he is back in town with an exhibit at the High Museum of Art that reveals another side of his work. Yes, there will be fashion shots, but Tyler Mitchell: Idyllic Space also features the landscapes, homes and communities of the Atlanta suburbs where he grew up. Entry $23.50. Two years in the making, after the dust settles at Echo Contemporary is a collaborative show curated by Frontviews Berlin, a group of international artists and art theorists, and Tiger Strikes Asteroid GVL, an artist-run space in Greenville, South Carolina. The exhibit will feature 30 artists from both collectives and suggests that “constructive dialogue across borders is crucial for fostering connections beyond nationality.” Free.

Actor and photographer Becca McCoy spent a year exploring eight states and seven countries — a sort of Eat, Pray, Love experience. Some of the stills she took during that solo travel year are on display in Explore: A Special Exhibit of Wanderlust, a Smyrna Arts Council exhibit which also features work by painter Leigh Pursley. The art can be seen at the Smyrna Community Center and Smyrna City Hall Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except for this Thursday, July 4. Free. MUSIC

Drummer Ryan Taylor will join experimental music maker and percussionist Klimchak on Saturday, July 6, for his next wildly improvisational concert in the Ear Pollen Series Pt. 2 at the Atlanta Contemporary. Expect large gongs, rattles, bells, drums and a host of other creative percussion instruments. The performance is scheduled to take place outdoors at 4 p.m. but may move inside because of the heat. Free.

THEATER

For a humorous take on love, war and sex, check out the new play The Game at Horizon Theatre. The story revolves around a fictional online game that is wreaking havoc on relationships — because what could possibly go wrong when people and technology collide? According to the theater, “this play is not intended for children.” Tickets are $30 and up with discounts available.

FILM + TV

The theme music for Jaws, Steven Spielberg’s 1975 thriller about a man-eating shark, is enough to make most people who’ve seen the film break out in a cold sweat. The same might be said for the cast and crew during filming: Some of the dialogue was rewritten just hours before a take, based on the actors’ improvisations, and a great white actually attacked one of the underwater cages when they were on location in Australia. Jaws will screen at the Tara starting Saturday, July 6, just in time for that beach vacation. Tickets are $16, with discounts available.
