Wole Lagunju – Artist Talk
October 10 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Come hear Wole Lagunju share on his practice at Alan Avery Art Company.
“My paintings juxtapose Yoruba Gelede masks with classical Western imagery to explore race, femininity, and womanhood, while offering a contemporary redefinition of traditional Yoruba art. Gelede is a male dance through which men celebrate women’s physical attributes, sacred powers, and motherhood. By dressing ‘new’ Gelede masquerades in Western ceremonial regalia, I critique the racial and cultural stereotypes that generate assumptions of a dominant cultural prerogative and a singular historical perspective on power, gender, and identity.” — Wole Lagunju
