SUMMARY:Repossessions
DESCRIPTION:“Repossessions” presents works by artist Chelle Barbour\, Marcus Brown\, Rodney Ewing\, Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle (Olomidara Yaya)\, Curtis Patterson and to be unveiled in the Spring of 2026\, a new artwork from Shanequa Gay. Each of the artists transformed objects from enslavement and Jim Crow offered by white families working toward repair. \nUsing a variety of visual strategies\, the artworks commissioned for “Repossessions” contribute to viewers’ understanding of the long aftermath of enslavement and the need for envisioning reparation. The title of the exhibition names the process of giving Black artists possession of historical objects and their facsimiles\, allowing them to “repossess” them from white family archives of enslavement\, and alter their existence. \n“Repossessions” is an indictment of the history of human ownership and its violent\, multigenerational\, and international legacy that demands to be confronted and reckoned with to this day. \n“Repossessions” was commissioned by The Reparations Project and is curated by Bridget R. Cooks\, Ph.D.\, independent curator\, scholar\, and professor of African American studies and art history at the University of California\, Irvine. The exhibition is an initiative of The Reparations Project in collaboration with Reparations4Slavery and originated at the California African American Museum (CAAM). The presentation at the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art is curated by Brandy Pettijohn\, Ph.D. and made possible by the generous support of Sarah Eisner and the Friends of the Museum.

SUMMARY:35 Years at Paradise Garden - Photography by Mikel Yeakle
DESCRIPTION:Paradise Garden Foundation presents 35 Years at Paradise Garden\, a photography exhibition by Mikel Yeakle on view March 7 through May 24\, 2026. The exhibition brings together more than three decades of Yeakle’s photographic engagement with Howard Finster’s historic art environment. \nYeakle first visited Paradise Garden in the late 1980s\, making his earliest photographs in 1989. He returned repeatedly in the decades that followed\, developing an ongoing relationship with the site. Rather than capturing a single moment\, the work unfolds as a photographic meditation on Paradise Garden shaped through sustained observation\, intimacy\, and time. \nMost of the works in the exhibition are composite images created through digital layering of photographs made at Paradise Garden across those years. Rather than single-moment views\, these works merge multiple exposures into unified compositions. The photographs are intended to appear effortless\, though they are the result of deliberate restraint and an ongoing dialogue with place\, balancing documentation with interpretation.\n“Like Howard Finster’s own practice\, built from found materials and layered messages\, Mikel Yeakle’s photographs embody a dialogue between reality and imagination\,” said Davia Weatherill\, Executive Director of Paradise Garden Foundation. “They honor Paradise Garden as it exists while recognizing that the site continues to invite reinterpretation\, inspiring new artistic responses across generations.” \nOriginally from Indiana and a graduate of the Art Institute of Atlanta\, Yeakle has long been active within the southern photography community\, including sustained involvement with the Atlanta Photography Group and the Little River Arts Council in Mentone\, Alabama. His work reflects a commitment to photography not simply as documentation\, but as interpretation—an effort to reconcile observation\, intuition\, and memory\, and to honor the complexity found within seemingly simple spaces. \nParadise Garden\, located in the Pennville community just north of Summerville\, Georgia\, is the four-acre art environment created by Reverend Howard Finster (1916–2001)\, one of America’s most recognized self-taught artists. Today\, the site remains a place of pilgrimage and artistic dialogue\, continuing to inspire new generations of artists. \nAn opening reception will be held Saturday\, March 7 at 2:30 PM\, featuring light refreshments and an artist talk with Mikel Yeakle. 35 Years at Paradise Garden is included with regular admission to the art environment and remains on view through May 24\, 2026. For hours and visitor information\, visit ParadiseGardenFoundation.org. \nAbout Paradise Garden Foundation\nParadise Garden Foundation preserves and interprets the art and legacy of Howard Finster through stewardship of his historic art environment\, exhibitions\, and educational programming. Located in northwest Georgia and listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, Paradise Garden welcomes thousands of visitors annually and serves as a center for folk and self-taught art.

SUMMARY:Footwork: Celebrating Soccer\, Culture\, & Community Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Atlanta as a host city for the World Cup this summer\, Emory Libraries’ newest exhibition\, “Footwork: Celebrating Soccer\, Culture\, & Community\,” explores the intersection of soccer\, culture\, and identity. Drawing on Emory’s collections\, academic expertise\, and global partnerships—from sneaker culture influencers to community collaborators—it tells Atlanta’s connected stories of soccer\, civil rights\, and globalism from 1968 to today. Along the way\, it shows how our region\, our teams\, and even our sneakers help express who we are. \nThe exhibition features Rose Library materials that highlight soccer’s cultural and historical impact across Atlanta communities\, including memorabilia\, photos\, and artifacts from the Atlanta Chiefs\, the National Professional Soccer League\, and the creation of the North American Soccer League. Apparel from the adidas archives traces the shared evolution of the World Cup\, athletic performance\, and streetwear. \nCurated by Randy Gue (Rose Library) and Melissa Carnegie\, founder of Kicks & Fros\, the exhibition is presented by Emory Libraries\, the Michael C. Carlos Museum\, and the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship. SUMMARY:DÉJÀ VU
DESCRIPTION:Spalding Nix Fine Art is thrilled to announce DÉJÀ VU\, a presentation of 4 shows by Susan Hable\, Esteban Patino\, Stacie U. Rose and Michael Porten. \nSusan Hable’s “Tending the Wild Quiet” transforms her garden into bold\, luminous paintings that are reflective of her inner emotional landscape where growth\, attunement and joy abound. Esteban Patino’s “Shapeshifter” explores the deconstruction of meaning\, utilizing an invented set of symbols that resemble language as building blocks\, to create paintings and sculptures that appear to form familiar figures. Stacie U. Rose’s “Physical Invisible” embodies that which we cannot see\, those defining sensations of a specific place or particular moment\, to create energetic abstract mixed media works. Michael Porten’s “Enjoy Yourself” is a series of oil paintings of flowers first rendered realistically in an alla prima style and then blurred\, exploring moments of intense change\, growth and the distortion of time experienced through these periods. \nPlease join us for the openings on Friday\, March 27\, 6-8 p.m. & Saturday\, March 28\, 12-4 p.m.!\nDÉJÀ VU will be on view in the gallery from March 27 – May 22. \nSpalding Nix Fine Art\, 425 Peachtree Hills Ave NE\, Suite 30A\, Atlanta\, GA 30305\nThe gallery is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. or by appointment.

SUMMARY:Deborah Dancy "Pivot" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Deborah Dancy
”Pivot”\nNew Paintings\nApril 10 – May 23\, 2026\nMarcia Wood Gallery\nOpening Reception: Friday\, April 10\, 6–8 PM \nMarcia Wood Gallery is pleased to present Pivot\, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Deborah Dancy and the artist’s third exhibition with the gallery. \nIn Pivot\, Deborah Dancy presents a new body of paintings that marks a turning point in her practice\, as layered pours of paint replace the brushwork that previously defined much of her approach. Gravity\, movement\, and accumulation guide the formation of each composition\, allowing the works to unfold through a process that embraces fluidity\, chance\, and transformation. \nWhile this direction represents a notable development in Dancy’s practice\, it extends an element long present in her work. Earlier poured ink and paint works on paper now expand onto canvas\, where successive layers of pigment create surfaces that appear to gather\, disperse\, and reconfigure across the picture plane. Veils of color gather and disperse across the surface\, creating luminous fields that shift between depth and atmosphere. Rather than directing the image through deliberate brush marks\, the artist engages a process in which material behavior and intuition interact\, allowing form to emerge through movement\, density\, and transparency. \nThe title Pivot signals a moment of transition within the artist’s ongoing engagement with abstraction and perception. By relinquishing familiar gestures and embracing the unpredictable behavior of poured paint\, Dancy enters a new phase in which the act of painting becomes a fluid exchange between artist\, material\, and chance. The resulting works reward sustained viewing\, as shifting layers of color and light gradually reveal their spatial and atmospheric complexity.\nBorn in 1949 in Bessemer\, Alabama\, and raised in Chicago\, Deborah Dancy is a nationally recognized painter whose abstract works explore perception\, atmosphere\, and the sensory experience of color. She retired in 2017 as Professor Emeritus of Art at the University of Connecticut\, where she taught in the Department of Art and Art History from 1981 to 2017.\nDancy is the recipient of numerous honors\, including a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship\, a National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist Grant administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts\, a Yaddo Fellowship and the American Antiquarian Society’s William Randolph Hearst Fellowship. In 2018\, her work was included in Magnetic Fields: Expanding American Abstraction\, 1960s to Today\, organized by the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and later presented at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.\nHer work is held in major public collections including the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, and the High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, among others.\nOver nearly five decades of practice\, Dancy has developed a distinctive body of work that explores the expressive and perceptual possibilities of abstraction.

SUMMARY:Richard Dial | American Idols
DESCRIPTION:Johnson Lowe Gallery is pleased to announce two new exhibitions opening April 10th\, 2026. \nThe gallery will present American Idols\, an exhibition of sculptures by Richard Dial spanning 2006–2025\, marking the artist’s first solo exhibition with Johnson Lowe Gallery in Atlanta. Known for transforming metal furniture into anthropomorphic forms\, Dial brings together his signature chair works alongside rarely exhibited freestanding figures. The exhibition takes its title from American Idol\, one of two non-chair sculptures on view\, referencing the early-2000s television competition where performance and public judgment shape outcome. \nAcross the exhibition\, Dial’s sculptures articulate a shared language of posture\, pressure\, and presence. The chairs read as bodies\, carrying histories of labor\, family\, and the cultural landscape of the American South\, while the figurative works heighten themes of devotion\, spectacle\, and longing. Together\, these works form a cohesive meditation on visibility and belief\, where steel becomes a conduit for human experience and the conditions that shape it.

SUMMARY:Gommaar Gilliams | Sky Atlas
DESCRIPTION:Johnson Lowe Gallery is pleased to announce two new exhibitions opening April 10th\, 2026. \nThe gallery will present Sky Atlas\, an exhibition of new paintings by Gommaar Gilliams\, marking the artist’s first exhibition with Johnson Lowe Gallery. In this body of work\, Gilliams builds paintings through layered processes that echo the formation of archetypes\, drawing from fables\, myths\, allegories\, and astrological systems where meaning accumulates through return rather than resolution. Surfaces composed of stitched elements\, dense pigment\, and visible corrections hold a sense of time\, as figures such as greyhounds\, birds\, and celestial forms move through the compositions with symbolic resonance. \nGommaar’s painting operates as a form of pre-linguistic storytelling\, where image and material converge to produce works that feel both enduring and unsettled. Gilliams’ compositions balance moments of clarity with ongoing revision\, allowing narrative to remain open and continuously formed. Sky Atlas reflects on the desire for coherence and meaning\, holding that impulse in tension with the understanding that such structures are always provisional.

SUMMARY:Ain’t Misbehavin’: The Fats Waller Musical Show
DESCRIPTION:Music by Thomas “Fats” Waller\nConceived by Richard Maltby Jr. & Murray Horwitz \nA sassy\, sultry musical celebration of legendary jazz great\, Fats Waller. \nAssembled under the expert eye of director/lyricist\, Richard Maltby\, Jr.\, Ain’t Misbehavin’ is one of the most popular\, well-crafted revues of all time and winner of the 1978 Tony Award for Best Musical. \nThe inimitable Thomas “Fats” Waller rose to international fame during the Golden Age of the Cotton Club and that jumpin’ new beat\, swing music. Although not quite a biography\, Ain’t Misbehavin’ evokes the delightful humor and infectious energy of this American original as a versatile cast struts\, strums and sings the songs that he made famous in a career that ranged from uptown clubs to downtown Tin Pan Alley to Hollywood and concert stages in the U.S.\, Canada and Europe. \nThe intoxicating music of Fats Waller will delight and energize audiences as well as provide great insight into a vibrant time in American history and music.

SUMMARY:Mean Girls The Musical
DESCRIPTION:MEAN GIRLS THE MUSICAL\nREGIONAL PREMIERE! \nMAY 1-17\, 2026 \nBook by Tina Fey \nLyrics by Nell Benjamin \nMusic by Jeff Richmond \nFrom comedy-legend Tina Fey\, MEAN GIRLS is the brutally-hilarious hit musical based on the popular 2004 film of the same name! Teenager Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna\, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois! Soon this high school newbie falls prey to a trio of bad-girl “frenemies” who will soon learn the errors of their bullying ways. MEAN GIRLS features a book by Fey (the multi Emmy-winning star and writer of TV’s Saturday Night Live and the series 30 Rock)\, lyricist Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde The Musical) and composer Jeff Richmond (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt). This queen bee took Broadway by storm and was cheered as “hilarious” and “a showstopper” (Entertainment Weekly) and “absolutely fetch” (Deadline). This production of MEAN GIRLS is a REGIONAL PREMIERE! \nThis production contains adult themes and is recommended for ages 10+.

SUMMARY:The Family Album of Ralph Eugene Meatyard
DESCRIPTION:A largely self-taught photographer\, Ralph Eugene Meatyard (American\, 1925–1972) was a pioneering and inventive artist who created some of the most original images of the mid-twentieth century. His work defies easy categorization as he experimented across various genres and subjects\, and throughout his career\, he maintained the ethos of an amateur\, approaching photography with a sense of affection\, discovery\, and surprise. He is best known for his staged scenes that suggest an absurd fantasy set in the dilapidated houses and banal suburban environs near his home in Lexington\, Kentucky. These scenes\, often featuring his family as actors and using props such as masks and dolls\, reveal Meatyard’s search for inner truths amid the ordinary. \nThis exhibition\, coinciding with the artist’s centenary\, features the thirty-six prints that comprise the artist’s first monograph (Gnomon Press\, 1970)—one of only two books he published in his lifetime—which Meatyard intended to stand as his definitive artistic statement. All thrity-six prints were recently acquired by the High for the Museum’s permanent collection. Through his idiosyncratic selection of images\, this exhibition explores how Meatyard’s singular approach and voracious curiosity expanded photography’s expressive and conceptual potential.

SUMMARY:Isamu Noguchi: “I am not a designer”
DESCRIPTION:Although Isamu Noguchi declared in 1949\, “I am not a designer\,” the internationally acclaimed artist regularly engaged with the space-shaping possibilities of design\, imagining and producing work in architecture\, industrial design\, ceramics\, furniture\, lighting\, stage sets\, and landscape design. In spring 2026\, the High will debut the artist’s first design retrospective in nearly twenty-five years\, featuring nearly two hundred objects\, many never or rarely exhibited\, spanning all facets of his creative output. \nIsamu Noguchi: “I am not a designer” coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of Playscapes\, a bicentennial gift for the city of Atlanta commissioned by the High in collaboration with the City of Atlanta Parks Department and the only one of Noguchi’s playgrounds built in the United States during his lifetime. \nHighlights of the exhibition will include sculptural models of potential and unrealized projects\, such as the recently rediscovered plaster for Play Mountain (1933); tables and stools designed for manufacturers like Herman Miller and Knoll; and a house model Noguchi designed in collaboration with architect Kazumi Adachi. The exhibition will also feature several large-scale installations\, notably the stage set for choreographer Martha Graham’s Seraphic Dialogue (1955)\, one of Noguchi’s innovative pieces of play equipment\, and a commissioned film capturing some of Noguchi’s site-specific plazas and gardens. The diverse\, interactive presentation will explore works that embrace function to understand Noguchi as a multinational\, interdisciplinary artist and designer who shaped a more open\, inclusive world. After Atlanta\, the exhibition will travel to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem\, Massachusetts (September 19\, 2026–January 3\, 2027) and the Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Rochester in Rochester\, New York (February 13–June 6\, 2027).

SUMMARY:Footwork: Where We Gather
DESCRIPTION:Footwork: Where We Gather joins traditional sports photography with contemporary works by photographer Sheila Pree Bright\, whose new series celebrates Atlanta sports culture and uplifts the community that sport engenders. From United tailgates to the pitch\, Falcons training camp to the stands and abroad\, Pree Bright turns the camera to the fans—and through them\, to the teams they love—finding togetherness and solidarity in the places where sport becomes tradition and fans become family. \nThis exhibition is part of a broader university-wide initiative celebrating Atlanta’s vibrant sports culture as the city prepares to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Through exhibitions\, programs\, and community partnerships\, Emory is exploring how sport fosters identity\, belonging\, and connection—on campus\, across the city\, and around the world.

SUMMARY:Honoring May Day: A Teach-In on Atlanta Labor History
DESCRIPTION:This is an in-person only event\, which takes place at Charis Books and More. It is free to attend and no registration is required. Please read the in-person event guidelines at the bottom of this page to be sure you can participate in the event. \nJoin Charis and the Living Wage Campaign at Agnes Scott College for “Honoring May Day: A Teach-In on Atlanta Labor History\,” a space for community\, reflection\, and celebration on May 1st in honor of International Workers’ Day. We will be hearing from Paul McLennan\, a labor and community organizer\, about his experience organizing in the South for more than 45 years and following the talk with a screening of the documentary “Domestic Workers Make History.” This gathering centers and uplifts domestic laborers in the Atlanta community\, recognizing the essential\, often unseen work they do to sustain households\, families\, and our broader communities. \nThrough this event\, we aim to not only celebrate their contributions\, but also create space for connection\, storytelling\, and dialogue. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in conversations about labor practices\, workers’ rights\, and the social and economic realities shaping domestic work locally and beyond. By coming together in community\, we hope to foster greater awareness\, solidarity\, and appreciation for the labor that too often goes unrecognized\, while imagining more just and equitable futures for all workers. \nWhat to Expect:\n11:30am – doors open\n12:00 – 12:30pm – Paul McLennan speaks about his experiences with labor organizing in the Atlanta area\n12:30 – 12:40pm – Q&A with Paul and friends/fellow organizers\n12:40 – 1:30pm– Screening of the documentary “Domestic Workers Make History”\n1:30pm – 2:00pm – Living Wage Campaign at ASC speaks / QnA \nAbout the Speaker:\nPaul McLennan is a labor and community organizer who has organized in the South for more than 45 years. He is a retired member of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 732 where he served as shop steward\, newsletter editor\, executive board member\, and delegate to the Atlanta Labor Council. In addition to the labor movement\, he has been active in the anti-war\, anti-apartheid\, immigrant rights\, and disability rights struggles. Currently\, he works part-time at the Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights\, co-chairs the Decolonize Decatur Committee of the Beacon Hill Black Alliance for Human Rights\, co-hosts the WRFG Labor Forum\, and is a member of the Atlanta chapter of the Southern Workers Assembly and the Atlanta Multifaith Coalition for Palestine. A major influence is Ella Baker and the radically democratic work of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) during the Black Freedom Movement of the 1960s. As a trauma and abuse survivor and grandfather to 3 grandsons\, he centers the importance of healing ourselves\, transforming the world\, and passing the struggle on! \nAbout the Living Wage Campaign:\nThe Living Wage Campaign at Agnes Scott College is a student organization that has been around since the 1990s\, and advocates for the development of positive relationships between the student body and the domestic laborers that serve the campus community. Its purpose is to uplift the concept of a democratic workplace\, fair pay for all\, and institutional respect for everyone who works at Agnes Scott College. \nThe event is free and open to all people\, especially to those who have no income or low income\, but we encourage and appreciate a donation of $5-20 in support of the work of Charis Circle\, our programming non-profit. Charis Circle’s mission is to foster sustainable feminist communities\, work for social justice\, and encourage the expression of diverse and marginalized voices. Donate in-person or via our website: www.chariscircle.org/donate. \nEvent guidelines:\n– All attendees must wear a face mask during the event.\n– We will begin seating people at 11:30AM EST.\n– As a reminder: If you are not feeling well\, please do not come to the event. \nIf you have any questions regarding these guidelines or to request specific accessibility accommodations including ASL interpretation\, please contact info@chariscircle.org or call the store at 404-524-0304. \nBy attending our event\, you agree to our Code of Conduct: Our event seeks to provide a harassment-free experience for everyone\, regardless of gender\, gender identity and expression\, age\, sexual orientation\, disability\, physical appearance\, body size\, race\, ethnicity\, religion (or lack thereof)\, class\, or technology choices. SUMMARY:Yeison Landero
DESCRIPTION:Yeison Landero stands at the forefront of modern Colombian roots music as one of the leading exponents of cumbia sabanera — the vibrant\, accordion-driven sound born in Colombia’s Caribbean heartland. Known as “el heredero de la cumbia” (the heir to cumbia)\, Landero delivers exhilarating\, high-energy performances that fuse tradition with contemporary power\, bringing Colombian soul music to new audiences around the world with authenticity and unmistakable charisma. \nHailing from San Jacinto in Colombia’s Montes de María province — the birthplace of cumbia sabanera — Yeison is the grandson of the legendary Andrés Landero\, widely revered across Latin America as “el rey de la cumbia.” Andrés Landero helped shape what the world now recognizes as cumbia\, translating the indigenous melodies of the gaita flutes into accordion lines\, driving them with African-derived percussion\, and giving voice to the lives of rural Indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities. Under his grandfather’s guidance\, Yeison began studying accordion at the age of seven\, inheriting not only a musical legacy but a cultural mission. \nToday\, Yeison Landero and his world-class band keep the classic cumbia sabanera sound alive while pushing it forward for 21st-century listeners and dancers. His performances are a celebration of rhythm\, heritage\, and joy — electrifying live shows that bridge generations and borders. \nLandero’s international career has taken him to some of the world’s most prestigious stages\, including The Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC\, Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles\, and the Festival de Orquestas at the Carnaval de Barranquilla\, where he was awarded the Congo de Oro in 2023. He has represented Colombia at global gatherings such as Expo 2020 Dubai\, the Global Environment Summit COP16 in Cali (2024)\, and a highly anticipated showcase at WOMEX in Tampere\, Finland (2025). \nBeyond the stage\, Yeison is deeply committed to cultural preservation and education. As the founder of the International Cumbia Fest in San Jacinto and the Fundación Landero Vive\, he works tirelessly to safeguard cumbia’s legacy while nurturing new generations of musicians in Colombia and abroad. \nWith his accordion\, original compositions\, and magnetic stage presence\, Yeison Landero continues to expand the global reach of cumbia sabanera — affirming his place as one of the most vital and dynamic voices in Colombian music today.

SUMMARY:Antifascist Dad: Urgent Conversations with Young People in Chaotic Times -- Matthew Remski in conversation with Nathan Evans Fox
DESCRIPTION:This event takes place on Crowdcast\, Charis’ virtual event platform. This event is free\, but registration is required. Register her – https://www.crowdcast.io/c/antifascist-dad \nCharis welcomes Matthew Remski in conversation with Nathan Evans Fox for a celebration of Antifascist Dad: Urgent Conversations with Young People in Chaotic Times\, a guide for how to talk with kids about fascism — and what you can do about it. \nFrom hit shows like Adolescence to hand-wringing pieces in The Atlantic\, we’re being told that today’s boys are not ok. The algorithm feeds manosphere content straight to their screens. Brofluencers sell alpha answers to complex problems. And far-right radicalization is at a fever pitch. \nBut if there’s a crisis among young people in 2026\, it won’t be solved by talking about them. We should be talking to them: about their needs\, their fears\, the world they’re inheriting…and what they can do about it. We also need to get clear about why fascism appeals\, and why it doesn’t get anyone closer to real friendship\, belonging\, empowerment\, or self-worth. How\, despite what the manosphere tells them\, it’s the opposite of cool. \nConspirituality co-host Matthew Remski explores 12 urgent conversations for antifascist homes. He breaks down complex ideas in age-appropriate ways to help families understand: \n– The cultural\, political\, and economic landscape we’re in—and why the alt-right mirror world is so seductive to this generation of young people\n– Body-based tools and emotional regulation techniques to help kids ground their nervous systems\n– Strategies for practical community defense\, moral courage\, and defining your own role in antifascism\n– How to stand with marginalized classmates and scapegoated communities\n– The intersections of capitalism\, fascism\, cult dynamics\, and schoolyard politics\n– Why fear-based\, authoritarian\, or condescending parenting styles backfire\n– What antifascism has to do with equity\, ethics\, and belonging—and why it’s relevant to discussions of porn\, consent\, intimacy\, embodiment\, and gender \nThis book is written from Remski’s own perspective as a dad. It will resonate with parents and kids of all genders\, but it hits especially hard for parents of boys—the kids most actively targeted by alt-right messaging\, who must think hard about who they are within the system that makes them; about who they will stand with in dangerous times; and about what they need to learn to create safety\, care\, and community. \nAbout the Author \nMatthew Remski is an author and freelance journalist\, with bylines in The Walrus\, GEN by Medium\, TIME\, The Boston Globe\, and The Globe and Mail. He’s a former yoga teacher whose research is informed by his past experiences as a member of two cults. He’s published eight books of poetry\, fiction\, and nonfiction\, including Threads of Yoga: A Remix of Patanjali’s Sutras with Commentary and Reverie (2012). \nRemski has cohosted the Conspirituality podcast since 2020. With colleagues Derek Beres and Julian Walker\, he has appeared as an expert on COVID-era spirituality and political extremism for dozens of news outlets. In 2023\, they published Conspirituality: How New Age Conspiracy Theories Became a Health Threat and Remski published Surviving Modern Yoga\, a republishing of Practice and All Is Coming\, in 2024. Antifascist Dad is his most recent book. Remski lives in Toronto with his partner and their two sons. \nAbout the Conversation Partner \nNorth Carolina–bred\, Nashville-based indie country artist Nathan Evans Fox writes songs that trace the fault lines between family\, faith\, labor\, and inheritance\, showcased on his forthcoming LP\, Heirloom\, out on May 29 via Free Dirt Records. Raised on four generations of family land in Glen Alpine\, North Carolina\, he grew up in a community shaped by mill closures\, factory layoffs\, and the slow erosion of working-class stability. His songwriting blends tenderness with clever turns of phrase and working-class critique\, creating space for listeners who don’t want to choose between their cultural roots and their hopes for a more just world. \nThe event is free and open to all people\, but we encourage and appreciate a donation of $5-20 in support of the work of Charis Circle\, our programming non-profit. SUMMARY:Seared
DESCRIPTION:With a savvy restaurant consultant and a waiter with dreams of his own added to the mix – everything starts to ignite in flames in this hilarious and insightful new play that explores what happens when art and money collide. \nAudiences will be up close to the action as the Woodstock Stage is transformed into the intimate kitchen of a New York City restaurant. SEARED is calling you into the kitchen to DISCOVER THE FIRE! \nHarry – a culinary genius with a flare for the dramatic – receives a positive review in a food magazine for his signature scallops and his business partner can see their restaurant finally making money. The catch – Harry refuses to ever make the scallops again. \nSEARED is a play that asks questions we are all deeply familiar with – what happens when the things that feel so intimately personal and our own become something that belongs to everyone? It’s also a play where we explore – intimately- the world of high-stakes cuisine\, and enter into the kitchen for a front-row look. We here at Woodstock Arts are so excited to create a fully functional kitchen onstage for this show and cook a meal for the audience to see\, hear\, and even smell! (We may not have enough portions for everyone to taste\, unfortunately).
