SUMMARY:SCAD Presents: Putnam County Spelling Bee
DESCRIPTION:The SCAD Atlanta Acting Department is proud to present an intimate performance of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book\, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor. Featuring a fast-paced\, wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn\, this bee is one unforgettable experience. \nAn eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives\, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words\, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing\, pout-inducing\, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box. \nA riotous ride\, complete with audience participation\, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a delightful den of comedic genius. Directed by SCAD student Georgia Blue Waters. Tickets are free for SCAD Cardholders (students\, faculty\, and staff)\, $5 for seniors and military\, and $10 for the general public. For more information\, email scadshow@scad.edu.

SUMMARY:In Conversation with Zadie Smith and Tayari Jones
DESCRIPTION:SCADshow and A Cappella Books proudly welcomes The New York Times-bestselling author Zadie Smith to celebrate the paperback release of her critically acclaimed novel The Fraud. The latest work from the acclaimed and bestselling novelist\, The Fraud is a kaleidoscopic work of historical fiction set against the legal trial that divided Victorian England. Smith will appear in conversation with Atlanta’s own Tayari Jones\, award-winning author of “An American Marriage.” \nAbout The Fraud \nTruth and fiction. Jamaica and Britain. Who gets to tell their story — and who gets to be believed? \nIn her first historical novel\, Zadie Smith transports the reader to a Victorian England transfixed by the real-life trial of the Tichborne Claimant\, in which a cockney butcher\, recently returned from Australia\, lays claim to the Tichborne baronetcy with his former slave Andrew Bogle as the star witness. Watching the proceedings\, and with her own story to tell\, is Eliza Touchet — cousin\, housekeeper\, and perhaps more to failing novelist William Harrison Ainsworth. \nFrom literary London to Jamaica’s sugarcane plantations\, Smith weaves an enthralling story linking the rich and the poor\, the free and the enslaved\, and the comic and the tragic.
