Your Source For The Arts In Atlanta

Emily Amy Gallery’s “Buy Local” features six diverse artists. In a story scheduled for the July 24 print edition of the AJC, I noted two who caught my fancy.

Zuzka Vaclavik’s mixed-media works on paper exude the excitement of an artist in the process of finding a new direction. As I wrote, “It’s a double irony that Vaclavik abandoned the figure and found inspiration in graffiti in the Renaissance heartland. A stint at the University of Georgia’s program in Cortona, Italy, inspired the energetic abstract drawings on view here.” I can imagine these even better as large-scale paintings.

Meta Gary captures the ephemeral logic of dreams in her well-wrought paintings. “These are the ones who have found you,” for instance, includes a herd of stenciled dinosaurs, and a rabbit out of Beatrix Potter sitting in a tree. A flock of birds escapes from a bird cage that couldn’t have possibly held them all. Somehow the ship with billowy white sails that float in the background knits these oddments together into a very satisfying enigma.
