Your Source For The Arts In Atlanta

The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center has announced the 20 artists whose work will be included in the 2019 Atlanta Biennial exhibition opening January 17. The exhibition — co-curated by Phillip March Jones, curator at Lexington, Kentucky’s Institute 193, and Daniel Fuller, curator at Atlanta Contemporary — is intended to give a broad view of contemporary art being created in the Southeast. The show will present works by contemporary artists from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Between 1984 and 2007, the Atlanta Biennial showcased hundreds of artists from Atlanta and across the Southeast, including: Tom Ferguson, EK Huckaby, Elizabeth Lide, Susan Loftin, Philip Carpenter, Genevieve Arnold, Mario Petrirena, Constance Thalken, Julia Fenton, Joe Peragine and William Downs.

The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center brought back the idea of holding a biennial in 2016 after a nine-year hiatus. In her review of the 2016 biennial exhibition, ArtsATL critic Rebecca Brantley called the show “ambitious but problematic,” but declared its overall presence as very “optimistic.”
