SUMMARY:Kenny Howes & The Wow with Mathis Hunter & The Rinse
DESCRIPTION:Kenny Howes is a singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist\, specializing in power-pop. \nRaised in Florida\, Howes began his recording career in the 1990s in Tallahassee. Overdubbing all voices and instruments (except drums\, performed by schoolmate Kelly Shane)\, Howes released his first collection Nothing Wrong With That\, first as a DIY cassette EP in 1993 and then (after adding songs) as a full-length CD in 1995. He then recorded and released his CD Kenny Howes’ Second Album in early 1996\, which is known for the track “Girls With Glasses” (“one of the finest power pop tracks of the ’90s\,” – Goldmine). The disc was ranked #157 on The 200 Greatest Power Pop Albums list in the 2007 book Shake Some Action: The Ultimate Power Pop Guide. In 1996\, Howes and drummer Kelly Shane relocated to the Atlanta\, GA area\, began work on Howes’ next CD Back To You Today! (released 1998)\, and stabilized a lineup for his new group\, Kenny Howes & the Yeah!. \nIn 2000\, indie label SecondHeaven.com released The Right Idea\, a compilation of songs from Howes’ first three CD releases\, which were now out of print. Many of these early recordings were featured on MTV “reality” shows such as Sorority Life and Fraternity Life. Kenny Howes and The Yeah recorded their 2001 album\, Until Dawn\, in Athens\, GA with David Barbe of Sugar\, with pre-production by producer Don Fleming. The album was released on TallBoy Records in 2002. Howes then released his CD Lady Friend in 2004. He also relocated to California; there\, his side project Hautewerk licensed three songs to the Rockband video game in April 2009. Kenny closed out 2010 with an East Coast Solo Tour\, and in 2011 joined The Smithereens’ Pat DiNizio in the Las Vegas revue Confessions Of A Rock Star\, for a year. \nKenny’s album Tornadoes Here And Past was released in November 2012\, with a vinyl version following in December 2012. PowerPopAholic.com had this to say: “A triumphant comeback in a year full of them. Don’t miss this one.” In 2017\, Kenny released a music video for his single She Knows What I Mean. Howes has performed with The Smithereens as their fill-in bassist\, and in Summer 2017 toured with the Retro Futura Tour\, as bassist for Katrina of The Waves\, Paul Young\, and Annabella of Bow Wow Wow. \nMathis Hunter & The Rinse\nMulti-instrumentalist-turned-songwriter Mathis Hunter has been a journeyman in the Atlanta music scene and beyond for decades. When looking for ways to categorize his music\, it is hard to ignore the diversity of ideas and the endless genre experimentation that characterize his discography. While this approach may at one time have seemed puzzling\, in today’s musical landscape it proves to be Hunter’s overarching strength as a songwriter. Woven through his albums are threads of clever melodies\, hypnotic riffs\, prominent grooves\, and earworm-inducing hooks from an artist that can pull from and operate within various genres. Hunter is seemingly able to find inspiration from the past and the future simultaneously\, while crafting songs and a sound that\, while hard to pin down\, offer a great deal to the willing listener. \nDespite Hunter’s history of broad experimentation\, his solo albums have taken a somewhat more probable path where sequencers and samplers give way to a more traditional “rock band” setup: two guitars\, bass\, and drums. Influences still reign in from all angles\, however there is a strongly traceable guidance from UK rock of the ‘60s through the ‘90s such as The Stones\, Small Faces\, Traffic\, Budgie\, Iron Maiden\, The Stone Roses\, Primal Scream…and there and back again.\nHunter’s active and prolific musical odyssey began on bass guitar with mid-90s punk rock luminaries Quadiliacha\, while the latter half of the ‘90s saw him as a guitarist\, and later as drummer\, of the space rock outfit Good Friday Experiment. In 2006\, he co-founded his longest lasting project\, the cosmic disco entourage Noot d’ Noot. In 2007 he joined The Selmanaires as a percussionist/guitarist where he remained until 2009. 2010 saw the release of Hunter’s first solo album\, Soft Opening\, on which he performed most of the instruments but also utilized many members of his other bands for overdubs. After the release of Soft Opening Hunter remained focused on Noot d’ Nootuntil it disbanded in 2014. It was at this time he also began a somewhat parallel career as a DJ. \nIn 2015\, Hunter formed Frosted Orange with former Noot d’ Noot members along with drummer Lee Corum and guitarist Andy Morrison. After the release of Frosted Orange’s debut album Hunter became a full-time DJ and then went “solo” again\, bringing Corum and Morrison along for 2017’s Countryman album\, 2019’s Mother Tongue\, and 2020’sMood Lighting. Frankie Sparks joined the group on bass in February 2020\, just in time for the pandemic to shut down live performances.\nTwo more albums and an EP followed- 2023’s V and Can’t Stay\, and 2025’s The Way In Is Not The Way Out. A new album\, Relentless\, is set to be released 30 April 2026 and the band will be performing RELENTLESSLY over the summer to support its release.

SUMMARY:Seared
DESCRIPTION:With a savvy restaurant consultant and a waiter with dreams of his own added to the mix – everything starts to ignite in flames in this hilarious and insightful new play that explores what happens when art and money collide. \nAudiences will be up close to the action as the Woodstock Stage is transformed into the intimate kitchen of a New York City restaurant. SEARED is calling you into the kitchen to DISCOVER THE FIRE! \nHarry – a culinary genius with a flare for the dramatic – receives a positive review in a food magazine for his signature scallops and his business partner can see their restaurant finally making money. The catch – Harry refuses to ever make the scallops again. \nSEARED is a play that asks questions we are all deeply familiar with – what happens when the things that feel so intimately personal and our own become something that belongs to everyone? It’s also a play where we explore – intimately- the world of high-stakes cuisine\, and enter into the kitchen for a front-row look. We here at Woodstock Arts are so excited to create a fully functional kitchen onstage for this show and cook a meal for the audience to see\, hear\, and even smell! (We may not have enough portions for everyone to taste\, unfortunately).

SUMMARY:The Drowsy Chaperone
DESCRIPTION:Winner of five Tony Awards\, including Best Book and Best Original Score\, The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving send-up of the Golden Age musical\, featuring one show-stopping song and dance number after another.\nWith the houselights down\, a man in a chair appears on stage and puts on his favorite record: the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical. The recording comes to life and The Drowsy Chaperone begins as the man in the chair looks on. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding\, a bumbling best man\, a desperate theatre producer\, a not-so-bright hostess\, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs\, a misguided Don Juan and an intoxicated chaperone\, and you have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight.

SUMMARY:DOUBLE TAKE
DESCRIPTION:Spalding Nix Fine Art is excited to announce DOUBLE TAKE\, a presentation of 4 shows by Corrina Sephora\, Betty Edge\, Guy Robinson and Erin Dixon. \nThrough metal sculpture and mixed media paintings\, Corrina Sephora’s “Reflections on the Universe” weaves together ancestral memory and cosmic reflection\, creating Art that becomes a vessel for movement between worlds. Betty Edge’s “Encore” looks back through her photographic oeuvre\, placing together unsuspected pairings of images captured in nature. Guy Robinson’s “Animism\, Alchemy & Reflection” interrogates these ideas in his surrealist and masterful oil paintings\, creating playful and at times unsettling compositions filled with patterns\, animals\, botanicals and everyday objects. Erin Dixon’s “On Both Sides of the Door” is a series of oil paintings exploring the familiar and disparate\, creating a possible metaphor for our contemporary conditions of instability\, vulnerability and adaptation. \nPlease join us for the openings on Friday\, May 29\, 6-8 p.m. and Saturday\, May 30\, 12-4 p.m. \nDOUBLE TAKE will be on view in the gallery from May 29 – July 17. \nSpalding Nix Fine Art\, 425 Peachtree Hills Ave NE\, Suite 30A\, Atlanta\, GA 30305 \nThe gallery is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. or by appointment.

SUMMARY:No God but Us: Bobuq Sayed in conversation with Garrard Conley
DESCRIPTION:This event takes place in person at Charis and on Crowdcast\, Charis’ virtual event platform. This event is free\, but registration is required for virtual attendance\, register here – https://www.crowdcast.io/c/no-god-but-us. Please read the in-person event guidelines at the bottom of this page to be sure you can participate in the event. \nCharis welcomes Bobuq Sayed in conversation with Garrard Conley in celebration of No God But Us. In this wry\, provocative debut\, two gay Afghan men—cast out of their respective countries of birth by circumstances beyond their control—collide in Istanbul\, a city that will test their willingness to sacrifice everything for the ones they love. \nWhen Delbar—a hapless twenty-something with dreams of becoming a drag queen—is spectacularly outed\, he flees the insular immigrant-dense suburbs of Washington\, DC to seek refuge with his sympathetic aunt in Istanbul. There\, he discovers a vibrant community of dissidents\, sex workers\, activists\, poets\, and heretics. Among them are Leif and his boyfriend\, Mansur\, with whom Delbar quickly develops a blazing fascination. \nBut Mansur also nurses a wounded heart\, having left his own family\, and his first love\, behind in Iran. This time\, Mansur’s learned not to dream bigger than his own survival. He’ll keep a low profile\, work hard to send money back\, and remain faithful to Leif—at least until his refugee status is granted. \nWhen riot police descend on attendees of the annual Istanbul Pride march\, Mansur and Delbar are thrust into dangerous proximity. With the country surging into authoritarianism\, each person must ask themselves: what constitutes a life well-lived\, and how high is the price of freedom? \nTold through the alternating viewpoints of Delbar and Mansur\, Bobuq Sayed’s debut is a story of borders and boundaries transgressed\, and a seductive exploration of what it means to make a home at the margins of society. At once an immigrant family saga\, a thwarted love story\, and a searing portrait of politics made intimately personal\, No God but Us is an ambitious introduction to a bold new voice. \nAbout the Author \nBobuq Sayed is the author of the novel NO GOD BUT US (Harper\, 2026). A 2022–23 Steinbeck fellow at San José State University\, a Lambda Literary scholar\, and an award-winning James A. Michener fellow in the University of Miami’s MFA program\, Sayed now lives in New York\, New York. SUMMARY:You Get to Be with Flowers: Writing with Flowering Plants with Anna Lena Phillips Bell
DESCRIPTION:What can flowers teach us about being in the world\, and what can they offer our writing? In this generative workshop\, we will consider how the presence of the plant world shapes our sense of place\, in memory and the present. We’ll write alongside flowers currently in bloom\, learning from particular plants how they may support us in expressing complex feelings and ideas. We’ll ask what inspiration flowers’ forms can bring as we map the structure of new poems and essays. We’ll read flower poems from poets and essayists including Marilyn Nelson\, Ellen Meloy\, Arthur Sze\, Robin Wall Kimmerer\, and Mary Ellen Solt. And we’ll think with flowers as they do their own generative work\, setting intentions for our creative practices in the seasons ahead.\nIf you like\, please bring a folding chair or something to sit on\, as we will spend a few minutes observing and writing with plants we encounter in the garden. \nHosted in partnership by Atlanta Botanical Garden and Lostintheletters. This workshop is supported in part by a grant from South Arts\, a partner agency of The National Endowment for the Arts. \nAnna Lena Phillips Bell is the author of Might Could\, winner of the Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize\, released in March 2026. She is also the author of Ornament\, winner of the Vassar Miller Poetry Prize\, and the chapbook Smaller Songs\, from St Brigid Press.
