To save him from the strain of conversation\, his friend convinces the local residents that Charlie is a “foreigner” who understands no English. The plan backfires with hilarious results as the lodge’s colorful inhabitants—from a cynical heiress to a scheming preacher—begin to treat Charlie as a silent confidant\, confessing their deepest secrets and dark scandals right to his face. What follows is a high-stakes\, mile-a-minute farce where a man who just wanted to be invisible finds himself the only person capable of saving the day.\n“A comic masterpiece… Shue’s play is a tribute to the power of the human spirit to find a common language\, even when the words are all wrong.” — The New York Times \nCONTENT WARNING\nWhile The Foreigner is a celebrated comedy\, its plot centers on a conflict with a local group motivated by xenophobia and extremism. Our production is committed to exploring these themes with modern intentionality\, specifically focusing on the absurdity of hate while prioritizing the safety of our performers and audience. To ground the conflict in a more recognizable contemporary context\, we will be utilizing a “Proud Boys” aesthetic and physicality for many of the antagonists. In terms of staging\, we plan to use very limited traditional regalia\, supplementing the wardrobe with modern-inspired “inflammatory” costuming (ie: “Proud Boys” references). This approach allows us to clearly identify the threat and the play’s anti-bigotry message without unnecessarily overwhelming the space with historical trauma-based imagery. We are dedicated to maintaining an open dialogue throughout the rehearsal process to ensure a supportive environment for all artists involved. \nWHEELCHAIR ACCESS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE – Our wheelchair elevator is currently out of commission and being serviced. In the midst of our tumultuous political climate and with the rise of harmful Christian nationalism\, local Atlanta theatre artists have come together to devise a performance that seeks to dismantle the toxic ideas of religiosity\, reclaiming Great Love as our collective eternal purpose. This walk-through experience is rooted in exploring healthy spiritual connection and creating community around healing from church-related trauma through humor\, dance\, narrative movement\, improvisation\, and meditative sound. \nAudiences will be guided by actors through a labyrinth of rooms inside Virginia-Highland Church\, each room holding a scene and activations for audiences to engage with. This walking path will involve stairs; comfortable shoes are encouraged. \nThe performance is 18+ due to mature themes\, explicit language\, and nudity. \nPerformances will run every Friday at 8:00pm and Saturday at 3:00pm and 7:00pm of March 2026 at Virginia-Highland Church UCC\, 743 Virginia Ave NE\, Atlanta\, GA 30306. DESCRIPTION:Directed by Spike Lee\n1988 | 121 min. | 35mm print provided by UCLA Film & Television Archive\nIntroduced by Dr. Beretta Smith-Shomade and Actor/Dancer Kyme Hersi-Sallid. \nComing off the success of SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT\, Spike Lee wrote\, directed\, produced\, and starred in the film SCHOOL DAZE in 1988. The film visualizes life at a fictional\, historically Black college\, Mission College\, one modeled after his alma mater Morehouse College and the other schools of the Atlanta University Center. During this homecoming week\, Lee’s musical illuminates concerns being grappled with in 1980s Black collegiate culture surrounding class\, color stratification\, and pledging at an HBCU. \nSCHOOL DAZE fosters debates on a multiplicity of fronts. Talking with students at Fisk University\, Lee recalls: “The fraternity members were upset about how fraternities were portrayed in the film. Despite the geographical distance they have enjoyed continuous collaboration and have performed at venues such as the Goethe Institute NYC\, Zeitgeist Gallery Boston\, Improvised and Otherwise\, Brooklyn/NY\, Zeitgeist Gallery Cambridge/MA\, University of Pittsburgh\, Bennington College/VT\, DeSingel Antwerp\, Radio Bremen\, Exploratorium Berlin\, Phenomorphonic Hamburg\, Les rencontres musique et littérature Paris\, Neue Musik im Fläming NMIF\, and Improdimensija Vilnius.\nOver the past 20 years\, their music has constantly renewed and reformulated itself; during a tour in 2023\, Arnal & Eichmann increasingly defined their current state of aggregation as a physical installation in space with sculptural and colourful approaches. \nThere is a proximity here to the work of Stefan Wolpe\, who had close ties to the Bauhaus and was director of the music department at Black Mountain College from 1952 to 1956. As executive director of the Black Mountain College Museum in Asheville\, NC\, Jeff Arnal regularly curates\, writes and lectures on the extraordinary legacy of BMC and the musicians and artists who worked there\, including John Cage\, Merce Cunningham\, Lou Harrison\, David Tudor and Stefan Wolpe\, whom Dietrich Eichmann counts among his most important influences as a composer. \nTo mark the centenary of the opening of the Bauhaus Dessau in 1926\, Eichmann has composed the ‘Concerto for Orchestra\, Percussion & Piano’\, which will be premiered on 7 and 8 February\, 2026 with the Saxony-Anhalt State Youth Orchestra in Halle (Germany). The conductor is Michael Wendeberg\, and the soloists are Jeff Arnal and Dietrich Eichmann\, who will improvise freely in dialogue with the composed orchestral parts.

DESCRIPTION:Legendary founder of The Meters George Porter\, Jr. brings his band to The Garden Club on Thursday\, September 10th. \nABOUT GEORGE PORTER JR & RUNNIN’ PARDNERS \nProlific New Orleans bassist George Porter Jr.\, released a brand new instrumental album entitled Porter’s Pocket with his longstanding quartet the Runnin’ Pardners available now via Color Red. Porter Jr is joined by his longtime collaborator keyboardist Michael Lemmler (Jubilation\, TriFunctA)\, drummer Terrence Houston (The Funky Meters\, Toubab Krewe)\, and newest member Chris Adkins (Raphael Saadiq\, Mark Broussard) on guitar. \nPorter was a founding member of The Meters and a lifelong session musician\, notably acting as Allen Toussaint’s go-to bass player throughout the 60s and 70s. Declared by Pitchfork as “one of the greatest bass players who has ever lived\,” and consistently finding himself atop Bass Player Magazine and Rolling Stone’s “Top 50 bassists of all-time”\, Porter was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 for his influential work with New Orleans funk progenitors The Meters. \n“Tito’s Dumpling Machine\,” has all the qualities that rare-groove vinyl crate diggers have always looked for from Porter. Drum breaks galore\, a syncopated New Orleans pocket and a funky Hammond organ lead will more than scratch the old-school Meters itch. Porter Jr. allows his Runnin’ Pardners band to really drive the track while George does what he does best: holding down the rhythm. \nThe song starts with a drum groove straight out of Uptown New Orleans circa 1970\, which would appear an odd choice for the lead single off a record but as Porter puts it\, “my attitude has always been that the drummer defines where the song goes and so I really enjoy letting a drummer set up the tune.” Along with leading his own band and collaborating with superstars such as Robert Palmer\, Patti Labelle\, Tori Amos\, and members of Grateful Dead amongst others\, Porter’s career could also be tracked by a lineage of great drummers that he has played with including the Meters’ Zigaboo Modeliste\, Russell Batiste Jr.\, and most recently\, Terrence Houston. \nAn innovator of funky music\, Porter gives credit to his hometown\, “Before there was ‘funk’ as people call it\, New Orleans musicians always had a way of using rhythm in a way nobody else was. I am just a student of Earl King and George French and that musical school and somewhere along the way\, people out there decided it was ‘funk.’ \nPorter Jr & Runnin’ Pardners continue to perform a weekly residency in New Orleans at the renown local favorite Maple Leaf Bar in addition to an incessant touring regimen across the country at tastemaker venues and festivals. Tinfish is an instrumental quartet blending elements of vintage soul\, funk and blues with danceable rhythms and down-home melodies. Formed by Delta Moon guitarist Mark Johnson\, Tinfish pays homage to groups like Booker T and the M.G.s\, Link Wray\, and the Meters\, while looking forward to the likes of modern instrumental wizards Khruangbin and Hermanos Guitarrez. Slide guitar and swirling organ mesh together over funky drums and bass for a hearty musical stew that’s hard to deny. Johnson is joined by Atlanta talent Chris Case on Keys/Organ\, Celeste Smith on bass and David Kaiser on drums.
