SUMMARY:Anamnesis
DESCRIPTION:The Greek noun\, anamnesis\, asserts the ever-presence of the past. It can be translated straightforwardly as ‘reminiscence\,’ but it is also a word that expresses the possibility of remembering things from a previous existence\, used by the ancient Greek philosopher\, Plato\, to describe the innate knowledge recalled by the immortal soul through each rebirth. Using anamnesis as its guiding principle\, this exhibition stages a series of conversations\, or remembrances\, between the work of Sergio Suárez (b. 1995\, Mexico City\, Mexico) and the Carlos Museum’s collections of Indigenous American art\, Greek and Roman art\, and Works on Paper. Through print\, sculpture\, and ceramic\, interspersed through the permanent collection galleries\, Suárez explores the passage and presence of time on a cosmic\, mythic\, and intimately human scale\, inviting us to consider the processes that transform objects into artifacts and the histories\, memories\, and lives they embody.

SUMMARY:Between Here & Infinity: Celebrating 30 Years of the Spelman College Art Collection
DESCRIPTION:Between Here & Infinity: Celebrating 30 Years of the Spelman College Art Collection\, an expansive exhibition featuring nearly seventy works by Black women artists who shape our permanent collection and define our mission. Beginning September 9\, 2026\, visitors to the Spelman College Museum will have opportunities to discover art and artists from the collection. The first exhibition to span both the museum’s galleries\, this exhibition will open in two waves: at the Bank of America Gallery at the Mary Schmidt Campbell Center for Innovation & the Arts\, opening September 9\, 2026\, and in the gallery in the Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby\, Ed.D. Academic Center on October 2\, 2026. \nBetween Here & Infinity: Celebrating 30 Years of the Spelman College Art Collection is grounded in dreaming and the Black feminist imagination\, exploring ways of knowing\, seeing\, and creating shaped by Black women’s lived experiences. Between Here & Infinity presents artworks drawn from the permanent collection\, organized by areas inspired by the layers of Earth’s atmosphere to gesture toward the vast and diverse qualities of the Black feminist imagination which shapes it: the Root\, works that ground the collection in origin and tradition; the Threshold\, works that evoke crossings through transitional space; the Interior\, works that turn inward toward intimacy and quietude; the Expanse\, works that are conceptually daring and electric in color; and the Horizon\, where the past meets the future and dissolves into limitless possibility. Visitors are invited to explore the exhibition in any order they choose\, taking in the collection’s range and depth.

SUMMARY:Cliterati Open Mic Featuring: Ansley Moon in celebration of Register the Missing
DESCRIPTION:This event takes place in person at Charis. \nCharis and Cliterati pair up to present an inviting and fierce open mic & reading series that celebrates new voices and seasoned veterans alike. Co-hosted by Karen G. and Theresa Davis\, all are welcome to come and share their work. If you would like to participate as a reader or performer\, all you need to do is arrive by 7:15 pm ET to sign up on the list. If you are a non-acoustic musician and would like to plug your instrument into our sound system\, please contact info@chariscircle.org ahead of time to let us know so we can have the right setup for you! There are no genre\, style\, or form requirements\, but please keep your set to under five minutes to allow everyone to have a turn! \nThis month’s featured poet is Ansley Moon in celebration of Register the Missing. \nA poetic tribute to the oft-silenced grief induced by gender-based violence \nAt the heart of Ansley Moon’s spare\, haunting collection of poems\, Register the Missing\, is a heartbreaking exploration of the often impossible choices faced by mothers and daughters in a world where over 50 million Indian girls have been lost to female infanticide\, feticide and gender-based violence. Interspersed with archival documents and photographs\, Moon’s poems move deftly between the voices of a widow forced to relinquish her daughter\, an orphaned child navigating identity and inherited loss and a chorus of unclaimed girls who remind us that “nothing stays buried\, not even a daughter.” Whether taking on historical tragedy and erasure or adoption or the mundanity of citizenship paperwork and mornings in a new city\, Moon’s poetry creates a poignant intervention against cultural silence that reminds us of the possibility of finding yourself at the very moment you thought you were lost. \nAnsley Moon (they/them) is the author of the poetry collection Register the Missing (Kaya Press) and How to Bury the Dead (Black Coffee Press.) They are an Asian American adoptee\, poet\, and educator. A graduate of the MFA program at The New School and a recipient of a Barbara Deming Memorial Fund Grant\, Moon’s work has appeared in Agni\, Hyphen Magazine\, and Southern Humanities Review\, among other publications. Moon writes the Teach this Poem series for the Academy of American Poets and is a Co-Founding member of The Starlings Collective\, a BIPOC adoptee writers and artists collective. \nThe event is free and open to all people\, but we encourage and appreciate a donation of $5-20 in support of the work of Charis Circle\, our programming non-profit. Donate on our website: www.chariscircle.org/donate or in person at the event. \nCharis Books is a fully wheelchair accessible space with on site van accessible parking\, two ramps\, and additional overflow accessible parking nearby. We suggest a donation of $20 for folks who are able. Donations can be processed in CASH at the door or online via GiveLively (links to Venmo\, PayPal\, Stripe and more). \nCAUSE WE’RE SUPPORTING\nAs with all of our productions\, a portion of proceeds will be donated to a cause we believe in. To further align our production with the themes of acceptance and community that are the underpinning of this show\, a portion of the proceeds from this run will be donated to New American Pathways. As a Georgia-based nonprofit\, their mission is to help refugees and newcomers from all over the world navigate the journey from arrival to citizenship. By supporting their work in refugee resettlement\, English literacy\, and career advancement\, we hope to honor the play’s message of finding a sense of belonging and ensuring that everyone\, regardless of where they come from\, has the opportunity to thrive in our local community. \nSYNOPSIS\nIn a remote fishing lodge in rural Georgia\, a pathologically shy man named Charlie seeks a quiet escape from the world. To save him from the strain of conversation\, his friend convinces the local residents that Charlie is a “foreigner” who understands no English. The plan backfires with hilarious results as the lodge’s colorful inhabitants—from a cynical heiress to a scheming preacher—begin to treat Charlie as a silent confidant\, confessing their deepest secrets and dark scandals right to his face. What follows is a high-stakes\, mile-a-minute farce where a man who just wanted to be invisible finds himself the only person capable of saving the day.\n“A comic masterpiece… Shue’s play is a tribute to the power of the human spirit to find a common language\, even when the words are all wrong.” — The New York Times \nCONTENT WARNING\nWhile The Foreigner is a celebrated comedy\, its plot centers on a conflict with a local group motivated by xenophobia and extremism. Our production is committed to exploring these themes with modern intentionality\, specifically focusing on the absurdity of hate while prioritizing the safety of our performers and audience. To ground the conflict in a more recognizable contemporary context\, we will be utilizing a “Proud Boys” aesthetic and physicality for many of the antagonists. In terms of staging\, we plan to use very limited traditional regalia\, supplementing the wardrobe with modern-inspired “inflammatory” costuming (ie: “Proud Boys” references). This approach allows us to clearly identify the threat and the play’s anti-bigotry message without unnecessarily overwhelming the space with historical trauma-based imagery. We are dedicated to maintaining an open dialogue throughout the rehearsal process to ensure a supportive environment for all artists involved. \nWHEELCHAIR ACCESS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE – Our wheelchair elevator is currently out of commission and being serviced. We’ll update this form as soon as it is up and running again. Please email info@renegadetheatreco.org for any questions about accessing the space.

Instead\, she’s stuck for an entire month with her family at a camp in the desert in Southern California. \nWhen she stumbles across a staff party on the first night\, she’s jealous of their joyful\, uninhibited dancing. She hasn’t danced like that since two years ago\, when she was forced to quit ballet\, which she once loved more than anything. She’s determined to leave dance where it belongs — the past. \nBut Jordan\, the handsome and magnetic hip-hop dance instructor\, keeps dragging it into her present. As Kat begins sneaking around and lying to her parents to spend time with Jordan\, she’ll have to ask herself — what is she willing to risk to finally feel free? And is it possible her feelings for Jordan could reignite her love for dance? \nAbout the Author \nJasmine Guillory is a New York Times bestselling author of nine novels including The Wedding Date\, the Reese’s Book Club selection The Proposal\, and Flirting Lessons. Her work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal\, Cosmopolitan\, Bon Appetit\, and Time\, and she is a frequent book contributor on The Today Show. She lives in Oakland\, California. It’s Only Dancing is her YA debut. \nConversation partner details to come! \nAbout the venue:\n– Doors open at 6:30pm ET.\n– Masks are requested/encouraged\, but not required.\n– This event takes place in the auditorium of the Decatur Library.
