SUMMARY:The World(s) She Made: Composing The Radical Lives of Kathleen Neal Cleaver
DESCRIPTION:The World(s) She Made: Composing the Radical Lives of Kathleen Neal Cleaver is the first public photography exhibit to explore the exceptional life of Kathleen Neal Cleaver. It draws heavily from the personal collection that Ms. Cleaver curated for decades and includes a few images from other collections such as that of Dr. Doris Derby. This photography show chronicles Cleaver’s personal journey from the child of a U.S. Foreign Service officer living across the U.S. South\, Asia\, and West Africa to a leader in the Black Panther Party and the international Black Power movement; and as she went from living “inside exile” (accompanying her fugitive husband to Algeria and France while she herself still possessed relative freedom of movement) to Yale University as a student\, all while raising two children\, becoming a law professor at Yale and Emory Universities\, and building a career in human rights.

SUMMARY:BECOMING
DESCRIPTION:Spalding Nix Fine Art is thrilled to present BECOMING\, a series of four exhibitions by Khalilah Birdsong\, Gretchen Wagner\, Mary Robinson and Angela Carter. Together\, the exhibitions explore transformation – how memory\, material\, color\, place and human connection shape what we carry forward and what we become. Khalilah Birdsong’s “There but for the Grace of You Go I” is a series of layered abstract paintings that consider how memory\, grace and human connection shape our capacity for resurgence\, inviting us to reflect on our responsibility to one another. Gretchen Wagner’s “Color Interaction VI” is part of an ongoing series of printed\, stitched and folded mixed media works that investigates how color responds when it is asked to occupy three-dimensional space. Mary Robinson’s “After Before” is a series of abstract works inspired by the continual flux of life\, utilizing materials and remnants from past works through the processes of painting\, printmaking and collage. Angela Carter’s “Indigo Sunshine” is a series of quilt-inspired mixed media works exploring memory\, place\, movement\, and the ways fragments of experience can be transformed into something new and whole. \nOpening Reception: Friday\, September 18\, 6-8 p.m. & Saturday\, September 19\, 12-4 p.m.\nOn view September 18 – November 13\nOpen Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.\, or by appointment

SUMMARY:Anamnesis
DESCRIPTION:The Greek noun\, anamnesis\, asserts the ever-presence of the past. It can be translated straightforwardly as ‘reminiscence\,’ but it is also a word that expresses the possibility of remembering things from a previous existence\, used by the ancient Greek philosopher\, Plato\, to describe the innate knowledge recalled by the immortal soul through each rebirth. Using anamnesis as its guiding principle\, this exhibition stages a series of conversations\, or remembrances\, between the work of Sergio Suárez (b. 1995\, Mexico City\, Mexico) and the Carlos Museum’s collections of Indigenous American art\, Greek and Roman art\, and Works on Paper. Through print\, sculpture\, and ceramic\, interspersed through the permanent collection galleries\, Suárez explores the passage and presence of time on a cosmic\, mythic\, and intimately human scale\, inviting us to consider the processes that transform objects into artifacts and the histories\, memories\, and lives they embody.

SUMMARY:Between Here & Infinity: Celebrating 30 Years of the Spelman College Art Collection
DESCRIPTION:Between Here & Infinity: Celebrating 30 Years of the Spelman College Art Collection\, an expansive exhibition featuring nearly seventy works by Black women artists who shape our permanent collection and define our mission. Beginning September 9\, 2026\, visitors to the Spelman College Museum will have opportunities to discover art and artists from the collection. The first exhibition to span both the museum’s galleries\, this exhibition will open in two waves: at the Bank of America Gallery at the Mary Schmidt Campbell Center for Innovation & the Arts\, opening September 9\, 2026\, and in the gallery in the Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby\, Ed.D. Academic Center on October 2\, 2026. \nBetween Here & Infinity: Celebrating 30 Years of the Spelman College Art Collection is grounded in dreaming and the Black feminist imagination\, exploring ways of knowing\, seeing\, and creating shaped by Black women’s lived experiences. Between Here & Infinity presents artworks drawn from the permanent collection\, organized by areas inspired by the layers of Earth’s atmosphere to gesture toward the vast and diverse qualities of the Black feminist imagination which shapes it: the Root\, works that ground the collection in origin and tradition; the Threshold\, works that evoke crossings through transitional space; the Interior\, works that turn inward toward intimacy and quietude; the Expanse\, works that are conceptually daring and electric in color; and the Horizon\, where the past meets the future and dissolves into limitless possibility. Visitors are invited to explore the exhibition in any order they choose\, taking in the collection’s range and depth.

SUMMARY:Queer Figure Drawing: Queer Across Generations
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to grow older in a queer body\, surrounded by queer community? \nJoin MODA’s Queer Figure Drawing Night with Ashanti Hampton for Queer Across Generations\, a special session celebrating queer bodies across time. For this gathering\, we’ll welcome a queer elder as our model and make space to consider the beauty\, complexity\, and possibility of aging. \nSo many of us carry questions about what it means to grow older: Will I be allowed to age? What does it look like to grow older in my body and in my community? Through drawing\, we’ll honor aging as something visible\, beautiful\, and possible\, and celebrate the bodies and stories that have helped make queer community what it is today. \nCome draw\, observe\, reflect\, and share space across generations. Seasoned artists and first-timers are all equally welcome.

SUMMARY:The Emory Cinematheque Presents: HE GOT GAME (1998)
DESCRIPTION:1998 | Run Time: 136 min. | 35mm\nDirected by Spike Lee\nIntroduced by Dr. Samantha Sheppard (Cornell University) \nIf you’ve ever watched New York professional basketball or witnessed the 2026 championship Knicks play\, you’ve seen Spike Lee live and in color. Lee is an avid basketball fan and has floor seats for all Knicks home games. He is also the director of many commercials that illuminate the sport like Chic H.I.S.\, the Continental Basketball Association\, and those that kicked off the relationship between Michael Jordan and Nike. Lee’s love and knowledge of basketball make his 1998 film HE GOT GAME aesthetically beautiful and contemplative. \nA fascinating look into one of America’s favorite past times\, the story deals with big-time college recruiting processes\, the money and politics involved in sports\, and one outstanding Black young man basketball player. The film is lensed by Malik Hassan Sayeed\, the same cinematographer for Lee’s CLOCKERS and GIRL 6\, and features real-life college and professional basketball personnel like coaches Lute Olsen of Arizona and Georgetown’s John Thompson and players Shaquille O’Neal\, Bill Walton\, and Reggie Miller. Says critic Roger Ebert\, “Lee uses visual imagination to lift his material into the realms of hopes and dreams.” And connecting the art to commerce\, film scholar Samantha Sheppard links HE GOT GAME to Lee’s later digital work within NBA 2K16—Livin’ Da Dream—the digital and film all wrapped up and sold in one. \nThe main protagonist is real life former NBA player Ray Allen and as his father\, Denzel Washington. It also features Rosario Dawson\, Milla Jovovich\, Zelda Harris\, and Hill Harper. \nThe film will be introduced by film professor Samantha N. Sheppard of Cornell University whose new book\, THE BASKETBALL FILM\, comes out in November.

We suggest a donation of $20 for folks who are able. Donations can be processed in CASH at the door or online via GiveLively (links to Venmo\, PayPal\, Stripe and more). \nCAUSE WE’RE SUPPORTING\nAs with all of our productions\, a portion of proceeds will be donated to a cause we believe in. To further align our production with the themes of acceptance and community that are the underpinning of this show\, a portion of the proceeds from this run will be donated to New American Pathways. As a Georgia-based nonprofit\, their mission is to help refugees and newcomers from all over the world navigate the journey from arrival to citizenship. By supporting their work in refugee resettlement\, English literacy\, and career advancement\, we hope to honor the play’s message of finding a sense of belonging and ensuring that everyone\, regardless of where they come from\, has the opportunity to thrive in our local community. \nSYNOPSIS\nIn a remote fishing lodge in rural Georgia\, a pathologically shy man named Charlie seeks a quiet escape from the world. To save him from the strain of conversation\, his friend convinces the local residents that Charlie is a “foreigner” who understands no English. The plan backfires with hilarious results as the lodge’s colorful inhabitants—from a cynical heiress to a scheming preacher—begin to treat Charlie as a silent confidant\, confessing their deepest secrets and dark scandals right to his face. What follows is a high-stakes\, mile-a-minute farce where a man who just wanted to be invisible finds himself the only person capable of saving the day.\n“A comic masterpiece… Shue’s play is a tribute to the power of the human spirit to find a common language\, even when the words are all wrong.” — The New York Times \nCONTENT WARNING\nWhile The Foreigner is a celebrated comedy\, its plot centers on a conflict with a local group motivated by xenophobia and extremism. Our production is committed to exploring these themes with modern intentionality\, specifically focusing on the absurdity of hate while prioritizing the safety of our performers and audience. To ground the conflict in a more recognizable contemporary context\, we will be utilizing a “Proud Boys” aesthetic and physicality for many of the antagonists. In terms of staging\, we plan to use very limited traditional regalia\, supplementing the wardrobe with modern-inspired “inflammatory” costuming (ie: “Proud Boys” references). This approach allows us to clearly identify the threat and the play’s anti-bigotry message without unnecessarily overwhelming the space with historical trauma-based imagery. We are dedicated to maintaining an open dialogue throughout the rehearsal process to ensure a supportive environment for all artists involved. \nWHEELCHAIR ACCESS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE – Our wheelchair elevator is currently out of commission and being serviced. We’ll update this form as soon as it is up and running again. Please email info@renegadetheatreco.org for any questions about accessing the space.

SUMMARY:The Apiary by Kate Douglas
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Sally J. Robertson\, The Apiary by Kate Douglas is a darkly funny and deeply unsettling new play set in a near future where the survival of the bee population may come at an unimaginable human cost. Inside a secretive research facility\, four women navigate impossible ethical choices\, corporate desperation\, and a horrifying discovery that blurs the line between human survival and monstrous transformation. \nBlending sharp humor\, psychological suspense\, and speculative horror\, The Apiary explores environmental collapse\, sacrifice\, and the terrifying logic of “the greater good” with the intensity of a nightmare and the wit of a razor-sharp satire. \n“Save the bees by any means necessary.”
