DESCRIPTION:Gainesville Goes Pop by Chris Hobé\nThe inspiration for this body of work comes from everyday life and the layers of life that make up a whole. Each one of my pieces incorporates different layers and iconic nostalgic imagery from comic books\, music\, logos and patterns. There are always subtle subliminal messages in each piece that are drawn from pop culture and childhood. I tend to use loud and vibrant colors because nothing says in your face happiness like some bright color. Lastly\, the techniques that I use come from years of creating stencils\, painting and illustration; each piece is a mash-up of pop culture and iconic imagery created to give you a one-of-a-kind visual experience. \nAbout Chris Hobé\nCalifornia born pop artist\, Chris Hobé also known as ArtRevolts creates a box for the world to think outside of. Through Hobés use of vibrant color combinations\, eclectic and popular culture themes has made his one of a kind art pieces highly sought after. Hobés clientele includes domestic and international celebrities and avid art collectors. His work has been shown at several well known venues and establishments including art Basel Scope Art Show as a Bombay Sapphire regional finalist. Some of his collaborations include\, the W Hotels\, Jack Daniels\, Svedka Vodka\, Bombay Sapphire\, Halo Lounge\, Atlantic Station\, CBS radio\, Puma\, Lab Art\, 20th Century Fox\, Lee Daniels\, Mellow Mushroom and Raddison Red Hotel. DESCRIPTION:The World(s) She Made: Composing the Radical Lives of Kathleen Neal Cleaver is the first public photography exhibit to explore the exceptional life of Kathleen Neal Cleaver. It draws heavily from the personal collection that Ms. Cleaver curated for decades and includes a few images from other collections such as that of Dr. Doris Derby. This photography show chronicles Cleaver’s personal journey from the child of a U.S. Foreign Service officer living across the U.S. South\, Asia\, and West Africa to a leader in the Black Panther Party and the international Black Power movement; and as she went from living “inside exile” (accompanying her fugitive husband to Algeria and France while she herself still possessed relative freedom of movement) to Yale University as a student\, all while raising two children\, becoming a law professor at Yale and Emory Universities\, and building a career in human rights.

DESCRIPTION:The Sun ATL\, Atlanta’s contemporary art gallery and event venue located in the historic Sweet Auburn neighborhood\, is honored to present “Chuck Stewart: Framing the Sound\,” an exhibition of photographs by the late Chuck Stewart (1927–2017)\, widely regarded as the most prolific and consequential music photographer of the twentieth century. The exhibition opens to the public on Saturday\, August 8\, and runs through September 26\, 2026. \nStewart’s photographs appeared on more than 2\,000 album covers over a career spanning seven decades\, and his portraits of the era’s greatest musicians remain among the most recognized images in American cultural history. Twenty-five of his prints are held in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History. His work has been exhibited at Jazz at Lincoln Center and recognized by institutions across the United States and Europe. \n“Framing the Sound” opens at a singular moment: 2026 marks the centenary of both John Coltrane and Miles Davis — both born in 1926 — and Stewart’s portraits of each are among the highlights of the exhibition. The show also features arresting photographs of Nina Simone\, Astrud Gilberto\, and Tina Turner\, among many others\, offering a sweeping visual record of an era that permanently shaped American music and culture. \n“It’s probably easier to ask me whom I haven’t photographed than to tell you who I have. But if there’s a historic moment in American music\, social or cultural history that you’re curious about\, chances are I was there or have photographs of somebody who was.”\n— Chuck Stewart \nThat breadth is reflected in the exhibition itself. “Framing the Sound” presents a curated selection of Stewart’s portrait work alongside a wall of album covers drawn from his extraordinary catalog — spanning Impulse!\, Verve\, Mercury\, Reprise\, Chess\, and other labels that defined the golden era of recorded jazz. \n“Framing the Sound” will serve as the opening event in a year of international gallery and museum exhibitions celebrating the centenary of Chuck Stewart’s birth in 2027. Through intimate interviews and vivid on-the ground footage\, the film explores often-overlooked barriers to outdoor accessibility—alongside powerful stories of resilience\, community\, and empowerment that emerge along the way.\nThe development of the documentary began with a diverse group of participantsconnected to Bay Area disability organizations\, including Ala Costa Centers\, BORP Adaptive Sports and Recreation\, The Center for Independent Living\, The Disability Cultural Center at UC Berkeley\, Friends of L’Arche San Francisco Bay Area\, Creative Growth\, and NIAD Art Center. These partnerships have provided invaluable insight\, ensuring the film authentically reflects the lived experiences of people across a range of disabilities. By featuring participants who are Deaf\, hard of hearing\, blind\, or who have mobility or cognitive disabilities\, Access Point highlights the many ways disability intersects with the natural world. It becomes not just a story of overcoming obstacles\, but also one of the universal human desire to engage with the outdoors—underscoring the transformative power of nature for all. Partnerships and participation in Access Point\nare currently expanding\, broadening its reach beyond the Bay Area to communities across the United States.\nAs participants explore outdoor spaces—from hiking trails and national parks to beaches\, forests\, and rivers—Access Point reveals the barriers people face\, including limited accessibility\, lack of resources\, and social or cultural exclusion. Despite the geographical distance they have enjoyed continuous collaboration and have performed at venues such as the Goethe Institute NYC\, Zeitgeist Gallery Boston\, Improvised and Otherwise\, Brooklyn/NY\, Zeitgeist Gallery Cambridge/MA\, University of Pittsburgh\, Bennington College/VT\, DeSingel Antwerp\, Radio Bremen\, Exploratorium Berlin\, Phenomorphonic Hamburg\, Les rencontres musique et littérature Paris\, Neue Musik im Fläming NMIF\, and Improdimensija Vilnius.\nOver the past 20 years\, their music has constantly renewed and reformulated itself; during a tour in 2023\, Arnal & Eichmann increasingly defined their current state of aggregation as a physical installation in space with sculptural and colourful approaches. \nThere is a proximity here to the work of Stefan Wolpe\, who had close ties to the Bauhaus and was director of the music department at Black Mountain College from 1952 to 1956. As executive director of the Black Mountain College Museum in Asheville\, NC\, Jeff Arnal regularly curates\, writes and lectures on the extraordinary legacy of BMC and the musicians and artists who worked there\, including John Cage\, Merce Cunningham\, Lou Harrison\, David Tudor and Stefan Wolpe\, whom Dietrich Eichmann counts among his most important influences as a composer. \nTo mark the centenary of the opening of the Bauhaus Dessau in 1926\, Eichmann has composed the ‘Concerto for Orchestra\, Percussion & Piano’\, which will be premiered on 7 and 8 February\, 2026 with the Saxony-Anhalt State Youth Orchestra in Halle (Germany). The conductor is Michael Wendeberg\, and the soloists are Jeff Arnal and Dietrich Eichmann\, who will improvise freely in dialogue with the composed orchestral parts.

DESCRIPTION:Legendary founder of The Meters George Porter\, Jr. brings his band to The Garden Club on Thursday\, September 10th. \nABOUT GEORGE PORTER JR & RUNNIN’ PARDNERS \nProlific New Orleans bassist George Porter Jr.\, released a brand new instrumental album entitled Porter’s Pocket with his longstanding quartet the Runnin’ Pardners available now via Color Red. Porter Jr is joined by his longtime collaborator keyboardist Michael Lemmler (Jubilation\, TriFunctA)\, drummer Terrence Houston (The Funky Meters\, Toubab Krewe)\, and newest member Chris Adkins (Raphael Saadiq\, Mark Broussard) on guitar. \nPorter was a founding member of The Meters and a lifelong session musician\, notably acting as Allen Toussaint’s go-to bass player throughout the 60s and 70s. Declared by Pitchfork as “one of the greatest bass players who has ever lived\,” and consistently finding himself atop Bass Player Magazine and Rolling Stone’s “Top 50 bassists of all-time”\, Porter was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 for his influential work with New Orleans funk progenitors The Meters. \n“Tito’s Dumpling Machine\,” has all the qualities that rare-groove vinyl crate diggers have always looked for from Porter. Drum breaks galore\, a syncopated New Orleans pocket and a funky Hammond organ lead will more than scratch the old-school Meters itch. Porter Jr. allows his Runnin’ Pardners band to really drive the track while George does what he does best: holding down the rhythm. \nThe song starts with a drum groove straight out of Uptown New Orleans circa 1970\, which would appear an odd choice for the lead single off a record but as Porter puts it\, “my attitude has always been that the drummer defines where the song goes and so I really enjoy letting a drummer set up the tune.” Along with leading his own band and collaborating with superstars such as Robert Palmer\, Patti Labelle\, Tori Amos\, and members of Grateful Dead amongst others\, Porter’s career could also be tracked by a lineage of great drummers that he has played with including the Meters’ Zigaboo Modeliste\, Russell Batiste Jr.\, and most recently\, Terrence Houston. \nAn innovator of funky music\, Porter gives credit to his hometown\, “Before there was ‘funk’ as people call it\, New Orleans musicians always had a way of using rhythm in a way nobody else was. I am just a student of Earl King and George French and that musical school and somewhere along the way\, people out there decided it was ‘funk.’ \nPorter Jr & Runnin’ Pardners continue to perform a weekly residency in New Orleans at the renown local favorite Maple Leaf Bar in addition to an incessant touring regimen across the country at tastemaker venues and festivals. As a Georgia-based nonprofit\, their mission is to help refugees and newcomers from all over the world navigate the journey from arrival to citizenship. By supporting their work in refugee resettlement\, English literacy\, and career advancement\, we hope to honor the play’s message of finding a sense of belonging and ensuring that everyone\, regardless of where they come from\, has the opportunity to thrive in our local community. \nSYNOPSIS\nIn a remote fishing lodge in rural Georgia\, a pathologically shy man named Charlie seeks a quiet escape from the world. To save him from the strain of conversation\, his friend convinces the local residents that Charlie is a “foreigner” who understands no English. The plan backfires with hilarious results as the lodge’s colorful inhabitants—from a cynical heiress to a scheming preacher—begin to treat Charlie as a silent confidant\, confessing their deepest secrets and dark scandals right to his face. Our production is committed to exploring these themes with modern intentionality\, specifically focusing on the absurdity of hate while prioritizing the safety of our performers and audience. To ground the conflict in a more recognizable contemporary context\, we will be utilizing a “Proud Boys” aesthetic and physicality for many of the antagonists. In terms of staging\, we plan to use very limited traditional regalia\, supplementing the wardrobe with modern-inspired “inflammatory” costuming (ie: “Proud Boys” references). This approach allows us to clearly identify the threat and the play’s anti-bigotry message without unnecessarily overwhelming the space with historical trauma-based imagery.
