Calida Rawles: Away with the Tides will open to the public on Friday\, March 27\, 2026\, and will be on view until September 5\, 2026. \nInternationally recognized for her intricate and delicate acrylic on canvas paintings\, Spelman alumna Rawles blends hyperrealism with poetic abstraction and situates her subjects in dynamic\, undulating spaces. Her recent work utilizes water as a vital\, organic\, and multifaceted element—as well as a historically charged space that concomitantly represents racial exclusion and individual healing. Calida Rawles: Away with the Tides bridges the past and present\, delving into the experience of Black people in America. Rawles partnered with Pérez Art Museum Miami and members of the historically Black community of Overtown in Miami to discover the interwoven narratives of place\, memory\, and belonging that animate her practice.

DESCRIPTION:Gainesville Goes Pop by Chris Hobé\nThe inspiration for this body of work comes from everyday life and the layers of life that make up a whole. Each one of my pieces incorporates different layers and iconic nostalgic imagery from comic books\, music\, logos and patterns. There are always subtle subliminal messages in each piece that are drawn from pop culture and childhood. I tend to use loud and vibrant colors because nothing says in your face happiness like some bright color. Lastly\, the techniques that I use come from years of creating stencils\, painting and illustration; each piece is a mash-up of pop culture and iconic imagery created to give you a one-of-a-kind visual experience. \nAbout Chris Hobé\nCalifornia born pop artist\, Chris Hobé also known as ArtRevolts creates a box for the world to think outside of. Through Hobés use of vibrant color combinations\, eclectic and popular culture themes has made his one of a kind art pieces highly sought after. Hobés clientele includes domestic and international celebrities and avid art collectors. His work has been shown at several well known venues and establishments including art Basel Scope Art Show as a Bombay Sapphire regional finalist. Some of his collaborations include\, the W Hotels\, Jack Daniels\, Svedka Vodka\, Bombay Sapphire\, Halo Lounge\, Atlantic Station\, CBS radio\, Puma\, Lab Art\, 20th Century Fox\, Lee Daniels\, Mellow Mushroom and Raddison Red Hotel. ArtRevolts also recently exhibited a solo show at Scope Art Show Immersive Miami 2020.

DESCRIPTION:The Sun ATL\, Atlanta’s contemporary art gallery and event venue located in the historic Sweet Auburn neighborhood\, is honored to present “Chuck Stewart: Framing the Sound\,” an exhibition of photographs by the late Chuck Stewart (1927–2017)\, widely regarded as the most prolific and consequential music photographer of the twentieth century. The exhibition opens to the public on Saturday\, August 8\, and runs through September 26\, 2026. \nStewart’s photographs appeared on more than 2\,000 album covers over a career spanning seven decades\, and his portraits of the era’s greatest musicians remain among the most recognized images in American cultural history. Twenty-five of his prints are held in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History. His work has been exhibited at Jazz at Lincoln Center and recognized by institutions across the United States and Europe. \n“Framing the Sound” opens at a singular moment: 2026 marks the centenary of both John Coltrane and Miles Davis — both born in 1926 — and Stewart’s portraits of each are among the highlights of the exhibition. The show also features arresting photographs of Nina Simone\, Astrud Gilberto\, and Tina Turner\, among many others\, offering a sweeping visual record of an era that permanently shaped American music and culture. \n“It’s probably easier to ask me whom I haven’t photographed than to tell you who I have. But if there’s a historic moment in American music\, social or cultural history that you’re curious about\, chances are I was there or have photographs of somebody who was.”\n— Chuck Stewart \nThat breadth is reflected in the exhibition itself. “Framing the Sound” presents a curated selection of Stewart’s portrait work alongside a wall of album covers drawn from his extraordinary catalog — spanning Impulse!\, Verve\, Mercury\, Reprise\, Chess\, and other labels that defined the golden era of recorded jazz. \n“Framing the Sound” will serve as the opening event in a year of international gallery and museum exhibitions celebrating the centenary of Chuck Stewart’s birth in 2027. To save him from the strain of conversation\, his friend convinces the local residents that Charlie is a “foreigner” who understands no English. The plan backfires with hilarious results as the lodge’s colorful inhabitants—from a cynical heiress to a scheming preacher—begin to treat Charlie as a silent confidant\, confessing their deepest secrets and dark scandals right to his face. What follows is a high-stakes\, mile-a-minute farce where a man who just wanted to be invisible finds himself the only person capable of saving the day.\n“A comic masterpiece… Shue’s play is a tribute to the power of the human spirit to find a common language\, even when the words are all wrong.” — The New York Times \nCONTENT WARNING\nWhile The Foreigner is a celebrated comedy\, its plot centers on a conflict with a local group motivated by xenophobia and extremism. Our production is committed to exploring these themes with modern intentionality\, specifically focusing on the absurdity of hate while prioritizing the safety of our performers and audience. To ground the conflict in a more recognizable contemporary context\, we will be utilizing a “Proud Boys” aesthetic and physicality for many of the antagonists. In terms of staging\, we plan to use very limited traditional regalia\, supplementing the wardrobe with modern-inspired “inflammatory” costuming (ie: “Proud Boys” references). This approach allows us to clearly identify the threat and the play’s anti-bigotry message without unnecessarily overwhelming the space with historical trauma-based imagery. These partnerships have provided invaluable insight\, ensuring the film authentically reflects the lived experiences of people across a range of disabilities. By featuring participants who are Deaf\, hard of hearing\, blind\, or who have mobility or cognitive disabilities\, Access Point highlights the many ways disability intersects with the natural world. It becomes not just a story of overcoming obstacles\, but also one of the universal human desire to engage with the outdoors—underscoring the transformative power of nature for all. Blending personal narrative\, poetry\, and guided reflection\, Archaeology of Self offers both a mirror and a map that takes readers through Dr. Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz’s framework for excavating one’s racial identity\, confronting internalized bias\, and teaching from a place of critical love\, justice\, and truth. \nThis is more than a book. Her research\, published in leading academic journals\, centers on racial literacy and educational equity. \nShe is co-editor of five books\, including All About Black Girl in Education: bell hooks and Pedagogies of Love (2024)\, and co-author of the multiple award-winning Advancing Racial Literacies in Teacher Education: Activism for Equity in Digital Spaces (2021)\, where she introduces her Archaeology of Self® concept and Racial Literacy Development Model (RLDM). Her most recent book\, Archaeology of Self: The Introspective Educator’s Guide to Racial Literacy\, was released by Routledge in Summer 2026. \nFor five consecutive years\, Yolanda has been named an EdWeek EduScholar Influencer\, recognizing her among the top 1% of education research scholars in the country. She is the founder of the Racial Literacy Project @TC and the Racial Literacy Roundtable Series\, which for 19 years has convened scholars\, educators\, and students for critical dialogue on race and diversity. \nHer work has been featured in the documentaries 2 Fists Up: We Gon’ Be Alright (2016) and Defining Us: Children at the Crossroads of Change (2022). She is also the author of two poetry collections\, Love from the Vortex & Other Poems (2020) and The Peace Chronicles (2021) and is currently writing a third collection reflecting on her childhood in the South Bronx during the 1980s. SUMMARY:The Emory Cinematheque Presents: SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT (2017)
DESCRIPTION:The film SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT introduces the world to filmmaker Spike Lee. Shot on a budget of $175\,000 in 12 days\, the film has grossed over $8 million. It opened in New York City on August 8\, 1986 with Island Pictures\, 40 years ago. Shot in black and white\, primarily to keep cost down\, it is set in late 1980s Brooklyn and positioned to tell a story of Nola Darling (Tracy Camilla Johns) as an independent and forward-thinking young\, Black woman and her concurrent sexual relationships with three different men. \nCritics called it “an instant hit” (BLACK ENTERPRISE)\, a “surprise smash” (PEOPLE)\, and Lee\, “the black Woody Allen.” Some film scholars\, especially Black feminist ones\, have been less laudatory. Cultural critic bell hooks remarked: “The narrators are male\, and the story is a male-centered\, male-biased patriarchal tale. As such\, it is not progressive\, nor does it break away from the traditional portrayal of female sexuality in film.” \n30 years after its release\, Lee reimagines this film as a Netflix series\, premiering in the fall of 2017. Reconceptualizing Nola\, (now played by DeWanda Wise)\, he gets to draw a fuller picture of what Nola Darling might be beyond her men. In addition to Wise\, the series stars Anthony Ramos\, Lyriq Bent\, Cleo Anthony\, and Ilfenesh Hadera. With this new iteration of the film\, we get to see how Lee imagines independent Black women in the 21st century. the 21st century. We will screen three episodes of the first season of the reboot.\n—-\nThe Emory Cinematheque is a theatrical venue offered by Emory University’s Department of Film and Media. Each semester on Wednesday nights at 7:30pm in White Hall 208\, the Cinematheque hosts professional screenings introduced by Emory professors and special guests.
