SUMMARY:Footwork: Celebrating Soccer\, Culture\, & Community Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Atlanta as a host city for the World Cup this summer\, Emory Libraries’ newest exhibition\, “Footwork: Celebrating Soccer\, Culture\, & Community\,” explores the intersection of soccer\, culture\, and identity. Drawing on Emory’s collections\, academic expertise\, and global partnerships—from sneaker culture influencers to community collaborators—it tells Atlanta’s connected stories of soccer\, civil rights\, and globalism from 1968 to today. Along the way\, it shows how our region\, our teams\, and even our sneakers help express who we are. \nThe exhibition features Rose Library materials that highlight soccer’s cultural and historical impact across Atlanta communities\, including memorabilia\, photos\, and artifacts from the Atlanta Chiefs\, the National Professional Soccer League\, and the creation of the North American Soccer League. Apparel from the adidas archives traces the shared evolution of the World Cup\, athletic performance\, and streetwear. \nCurated by Randy Gue (Rose Library) and Melissa Carnegie\, founder of Kicks & Fros\, the exhibition is presented by Emory Libraries\, the Michael C. Carlos Museum\, and the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship. Visit the Footwork initiative page at https://libraries.emory.edu/footwork to find out more about Emory’s campuswide Footwork initiative!

SUMMARY:DOUBLE TAKE
DESCRIPTION:Spalding Nix Fine Art is excited to announce DOUBLE TAKE\, a presentation of 4 shows by Corrina Sephora\, Betty Edge\, Guy Robinson and Erin Dixon. \nThrough metal sculpture and mixed media paintings\, Corrina Sephora’s “Reflections on the Universe” weaves together ancestral memory and cosmic reflection\, creating Art that becomes a vessel for movement between worlds. Betty Edge’s “Encore” looks back through her photographic oeuvre\, placing together unsuspected pairings of images captured in nature. Guy Robinson’s “Animism\, Alchemy & Reflection” interrogates these ideas in his surrealist and masterful oil paintings\, creating playful and at times unsettling compositions filled with patterns\, animals\, botanicals and everyday objects. Erin Dixon’s “On Both Sides of the Door” is a series of oil paintings exploring the familiar and disparate\, creating a possible metaphor for our contemporary conditions of instability\, vulnerability and adaptation. \nPlease join us for the openings on Friday\, May 29\, 6-8 p.m. and Saturday\, May 30\, 12-4 p.m. \nDOUBLE TAKE will be on view in the gallery from May 29 – July 17. \nSpalding Nix Fine Art\, 425 Peachtree Hills Ave NE\, Suite 30A\, Atlanta\, GA 30305 \nThe gallery is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. or by appointment.

SUMMARY:Pixels at Play: An Exhibition by Billy Clifton-Strawn
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta Central Library presents Pixels at Play by Billy Clifton-Strawn.\nA sweeping multimedia exhibition.\nThe exhibition spans monumental fabric prints\, archival pigmented prints\, and high-definition digital screen works\, exploring play not as a childlike diversion but as a radical mode of artistic and philosophical investigation. Closed on Sunday.\nJoin the Library’s Artist In Residence for a free public Artist Panel Discussion on Saturday\, July 11\, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm\, followed by a Reception from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and Q&A with Billy Clifton-Strawn and the moderator from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

SUMMARY:"How I See Her" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:“How I See Her” explores female friendships\, girlhood\, and the feeling of home through artworks made in a shared space. \nThe Gail Girls is an art collective of three artists: Isabella Martino\, Aida Alarcon\, and Juleah Everglade. This roommate trio moved to Gainesville together in 2023 as alumnae of University of North Georgia\, where they immediately configured their home to be a hub of creativity where artworks and big ideas fill every empty space. Reflecting on their cohesive style and shared themes in their respective portfolios inspired them to dive into creating a show together as a way to highlight their unique collective dynamic as artists\, roommates\, and friends. \nVisitors are invited to experience this special exhibition at the Smithgall Arts Center from June 10 through July 10 on Tuesday – Friday between 10:00 PM – 4:00 PM. \nJoin us for an artist reception on June 23rd from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM.

SUMMARY:Wild Aster Young Writers Summer Studio
DESCRIPTION:In this 6-week workshop\, young writers will explore the craft of the short story through imagination\, observation\, and play. Each week blends short readings\, guided discussion\, and generative writing exercises designed to help students discover their voice and develop original fiction. \nWe’ll focus on the core elements of storytelling—character\, scene\, dialogue\, setting\, and conflict—moving between looking closely at how stories work and writing new material in real time. The emphasis is on process: staying curious\, experimenting on the page\, and learning how stories begin to take shape. \nIn the final sessions\, students will have the opportunity to share a short story in progress and receive supportive\, structured feedback from the group. The goal is to build confidence as writers while learning how to revise with care\, attention\, and intention. \nBy the end of the workshop\, students will leave with a completed short story draft\, a stronger understanding of fiction fundamentals\, and a community of fellow writers.

SUMMARY:Isamu Noguchi: “I am not a designer”
DESCRIPTION:Although Isamu Noguchi declared in 1949\, “I am not a designer\,” the internationally acclaimed artist regularly engaged with the space-shaping possibilities of design\, imagining and producing work in architecture\, industrial design\, ceramics\, furniture\, lighting\, stage sets\, and landscape design. In spring 2026\, the High will debut the artist’s first design retrospective in nearly twenty-five years\, featuring nearly two hundred objects\, many never or rarely exhibited\, spanning all facets of his creative output. \nIsamu Noguchi: “I am not a designer” coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of Playscapes\, a bicentennial gift for the city of Atlanta commissioned by the High in collaboration with the City of Atlanta Parks Department and the only one of Noguchi’s playgrounds built in the United States during his lifetime. \nHighlights of the exhibition will include sculptural models of potential and unrealized projects\, such as the recently rediscovered plaster for Play Mountain (1933); tables and stools designed for manufacturers like Herman Miller and Knoll; and a house model Noguchi designed in collaboration with architect Kazumi Adachi. The exhibition will also feature several large-scale installations\, notably the stage set for choreographer Martha Graham’s Seraphic Dialogue (1955)\, one of Noguchi’s innovative pieces of play equipment\, and a commissioned film capturing some of Noguchi’s site-specific plazas and gardens. The diverse\, interactive presentation will explore works that embrace function to understand Noguchi as a multinational\, interdisciplinary artist and designer who shaped a more open\, inclusive world. After Atlanta\, the exhibition will travel to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem\, Massachusetts (September 19\, 2026–January 3\, 2027) and the Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Rochester in Rochester\, New York (February 13–June 6\, 2027).

SUMMARY:Black Feminist Book Club Reads: The Death of Vivek Oji
DESCRIPTION:The Black Feminist Book Club reads books written by Black transgender\, gender expansive\, and/or women writers\, which center the liberation\, struggle\, and lived experiences of oppressed people/marginalized groups through a Black feminist perspective. The group celebrates classic and contemporary Black authors of fiction and nonfiction\, all in the comfort of a historic feminist bookstore where many of these authors once read or shared their works! Our goal is for these texts to be welcoming and accessible regardless of your background or familiarity with the books. \nYemisi Combahee\, a senior organizer with Black Feminist Future is the facilitator of this group. All community members are invited to attend with the acknowledgment that this is a space that centers Black women and gender expansive folks’ thoughts\, creativity\, and lived experiences. We encourage folks to read the months book before our gathering but it is not required – come as you are\, regardless of how much you’ve read! \nThis group meets in-person at Charis on the first Sunday of each month at 3pm. \nAbout our July book: \nThe Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi \nWhat does it mean for a family to lose a child they never really knew? \nOne afternoon\, in a town in southeastern Nigeria\, a mother opens her front door to discover her son’s body\, wrapped in colorful fabric\, at her feet. What follows is the tumultuous\, heart-wrenching story of one family’s struggle to understand a child whose spirit is both gentle and mysterious. Raised by a distant father and an understanding but overprotective mother\, Vivek suffers disorienting blackouts\, moments of disconnection between self and surroundings. As adolescence gives way to adulthood\, Vivek finds solace in friendships with the warm\, boisterous daughters of the Nigerwives\, foreign-born women married to Nigerian men. But Vivek’s closest bond is with Osita\, the worldly\, high-spirited cousin whose teasing confidence masks a guarded private life. As their relationship deepens—and Osita struggles to understand Vivek’s escalating crisis—the mystery gives way to a heart-stopping act of violence in a moment of exhilarating freedom. \nPropulsively readable\, teeming with unforgettable characters\, The Death of Vivek Oji is a novel of family and friendship that challenges expectations—a dramatic story of loss and transcendence that will move every reader. \n2026 Books: \nJanuary: The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw \nFebruary: A Black Women’s History of the United States by Daina Ramey Berry & Kali Nicole Gross \nMarch: Gorilla\, My Love by Toni Cade Bambara \nApril: Love Poems by Nikki Giovanni \nMay: The Gilda Stories by Jewelle Gomez \nJune: The Cancer Journals by Audre Lorde \nJuly: The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi \nAugust: The War Before: The True Life Story of Becoming a Black Panther\, Keeping the Faith in Prison\, and Fighting for Those Left Behind by Safiya Bukhari \nSeptember: Sassafrass\, Cypress & Indigo by Ntozake Shange \nOctober: Belly of the Beast: The Politics of Anti-Fatness as Anti-Blackness by Da’Shaun L. SUMMARY:After the 4th of July\, Begin the World Over: A Listening Party and Alternative Future Building Conversation with Kung Li Sun & Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson
DESCRIPTION:Join organizer and author\, Kung Li Sun\, for a listening party and conversation in celebration of the release of the audiobook of their alternative history novel\, Begin the World Over. Kung Li will be joined in conversation by Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson. \nThe day after the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States\, come together with activists and fellow visionaries to explore the possibilities of the 5th of July. What comes after the United States of America as we have known it? What stories and histories can we tell about the past so that we can build the futures that will allow everyone to thrive? What lingering stories must be released so that we can all be more free? \nYou do not have to have read the novel to join in the listening party and conversation. \nAbout the Book \nA revolutionary tale of Black and Indigenous insurrection. History as it should have been. \nBegin the World Over is a counterfactual novel about the Founders’ greatest fear–that Black and Indigenous people might join forces to undo the newly formed United States of America–coming true. \nIn 1793\, as revolutionaries in the West Indies take up arms\, James Hemings has little interest in joining the fight for libert –talented and favored\, he is careful to protect his relative comforts as Thomas Jefferson’s enslaved chef. But when he meets Denmark Vesey\, James is immediately smitten. The formidable first mate persuades James to board his ship\, on its way to the revolt in Saint-Domingue. There and on the mainland they join forces with a diverse cast of characters\, including a gender nonconforming prophetess\, a formerly enslaved jockey\, and a Muskogee horse trader. The resulting adventure masterfully mixes real historical figures and events with a riotous retelling of a possible history in which James must decide whether to return to his constrained but composed former life\, or join the coalition of Black revolutionaries and Muskogee resistance to fight the American slavers and settlers. \nAbout the Author \nKung Li Sun is a lifelong southerner raised in an immigrant family and currently based on the Gulf Coast. As a public interest attorney\, she brought class-action lawsuits on behalf of people in prisons and jails. Sun left lawyering to support undocumented and abolitionist organizers as a strategist and trainer\, and to write. Their first novel\, Begin the World Over\, was published by AK Press in 2022 and is part of the Emergent Strategy series. \nAbout the Conversation Partner \nAsh-Lee Woodard Henderson is an Affrilachian (Black Appalachian) woman from the working class\, born and raised in Southeast Tennessee. She is the first Black woman to serve as Co-Executive Director of the Highlander Research & Education Center in New Market\, TN. As a member of multiple leadership teams in the Movement for Black Lives (M4BL)\, Ash-Lee has thrown down on the Vision for Black Lives and the BREATHE Act. Ash-Lee has served on the governance council of the Southern Movement Assembly\, the advisory committee of the National Bailout Collective\, and is an active leader of The Frontline. She is a long-time activist who has done work in movements fighting for workers\, for reproductive justice\, for LGBTQUIA+ folks\, for environmental justice\, and more. \nThe event is free and open to all people\, but we encourage and appreciate a donation of $5-20 in support of the work of Charis Circle\, our programming non-profit. Donate on Crowdcast or via our website: www.chariscircle.org/donate or in person at the event. \nCharis Books is a fully wheelchair accessible space with on site van accessible parking\, two ramps\, and additional overflow accessible parking nearby. SUMMARY:Footwork: Where We Gather
