SUMMARY:35 Years at Paradise Garden - Photography by Mikel Yeakle
DESCRIPTION:Paradise Garden Foundation presents 35 Years at Paradise Garden\, a photography exhibition by Mikel Yeakle on view March 7 through May 24\, 2026. The exhibition brings together more than three decades of Yeakle’s photographic engagement with Howard Finster’s historic art environment. \nYeakle first visited Paradise Garden in the late 1980s\, making his earliest photographs in 1989. He returned repeatedly in the decades that followed\, developing an ongoing relationship with the site. Rather than capturing a single moment\, the work unfolds as a photographic meditation on Paradise Garden shaped through sustained observation\, intimacy\, and time. \nMost of the works in the exhibition are composite images created through digital layering of photographs made at Paradise Garden across those years. Rather than single-moment views\, these works merge multiple exposures into unified compositions. The photographs are intended to appear effortless\, though they are the result of deliberate restraint and an ongoing dialogue with place\, balancing documentation with interpretation.\n“Like Howard Finster’s own practice\, built from found materials and layered messages\, Mikel Yeakle’s photographs embody a dialogue between reality and imagination\,” said Davia Weatherill\, Executive Director of Paradise Garden Foundation. “They honor Paradise Garden as it exists while recognizing that the site continues to invite reinterpretation\, inspiring new artistic responses across generations.” \nOriginally from Indiana and a graduate of the Art Institute of Atlanta\, Yeakle has long been active within the southern photography community\, including sustained involvement with the Atlanta Photography Group and the Little River Arts Council in Mentone\, Alabama. His work reflects a commitment to photography not simply as documentation\, but as interpretation—an effort to reconcile observation\, intuition\, and memory\, and to honor the complexity found within seemingly simple spaces. \nParadise Garden\, located in the Pennville community just north of Summerville\, Georgia\, is the four-acre art environment created by Reverend Howard Finster (1916–2001)\, one of America’s most recognized self-taught artists. Today\, the site remains a place of pilgrimage and artistic dialogue\, continuing to inspire new generations of artists. \nAn opening reception will be held Saturday\, March 7 at 2:30 PM\, featuring light refreshments and an artist talk with Mikel Yeakle. 35 Years at Paradise Garden is included with regular admission to the art environment and remains on view through May 24\, 2026. For hours and visitor information\, visit ParadiseGardenFoundation.org. \nAbout Paradise Garden Foundation\nParadise Garden Foundation preserves and interprets the art and legacy of Howard Finster through stewardship of his historic art environment\, exhibitions\, and educational programming. Located in northwest Georgia and listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, Paradise Garden welcomes thousands of visitors annually and serves as a center for folk and self-taught art.

SUMMARY:Footwork: Celebrating Soccer\, Culture\, & Community Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Atlanta as a host city for the World Cup this summer\, Emory Libraries’ newest exhibition\, “Footwork: Celebrating Soccer\, Culture\, & Community\,” explores the intersection of soccer\, culture\, and identity. Drawing on Emory’s collections\, academic expertise\, and global partnerships—from sneaker culture influencers to community collaborators—it tells Atlanta’s connected stories of soccer\, civil rights\, and globalism from 1968 to today. Along the way\, it shows how our region\, our teams\, and even our sneakers help express who we are. \nThe exhibition features Rose Library materials that highlight soccer’s cultural and historical impact across Atlanta communities\, including memorabilia\, photos\, and artifacts from the Atlanta Chiefs\, the National Professional Soccer League\, and the creation of the North American Soccer League. Apparel from the adidas archives traces the shared evolution of the World Cup\, athletic performance\, and streetwear. \nCurated by Randy Gue (Rose Library) and Melissa Carnegie\, founder of Kicks & Fros\, the exhibition is presented by Emory Libraries\, the Michael C. Carlos Museum\, and the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship. Visit the Footwork initiative page at https://libraries.emory.edu/footwork to find out more about Emory’s campuswide Footwork initiative!

SUMMARY:DÉJÀ VU
DESCRIPTION:Spalding Nix Fine Art is thrilled to announce DÉJÀ VU\, a presentation of 4 shows by Susan Hable\, Esteban Patino\, Stacie U. Rose and Michael Porten. \nSusan Hable’s “Tending the Wild Quiet” transforms her garden into bold\, luminous paintings that are reflective of her inner emotional landscape where growth\, attunement and joy abound. Esteban Patino’s “Shapeshifter” explores the deconstruction of meaning\, utilizing an invented set of symbols that resemble language as building blocks\, to create paintings and sculptures that appear to form familiar figures. Stacie U. Rose’s “Physical Invisible” embodies that which we cannot see\, those defining sensations of a specific place or particular moment\, to create energetic abstract mixed media works. Michael Porten’s “Enjoy Yourself” is a series of oil paintings of flowers first rendered realistically in an alla prima style and then blurred\, exploring moments of intense change\, growth and the distortion of time experienced through these periods. \nPlease join us for the openings on Friday\, March 27\, 6-8 p.m. & Saturday\, March 28\, 12-4 p.m.!\nDÉJÀ VU will be on view in the gallery from March 27 – May 22. \nSpalding Nix Fine Art\, 425 Peachtree Hills Ave NE\, Suite 30A\, Atlanta\, GA 30305\nThe gallery is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. or by appointment.

SUMMARY:Deborah Dancy "Pivot" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Deborah Dancy
”Pivot”\nNew Paintings\nApril 10 – May 23\, 2026\nMarcia Wood Gallery\nOpening Reception: Friday\, April 10\, 6–8 PM \nMarcia Wood Gallery is pleased to present Pivot\, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Deborah Dancy and the artist’s third exhibition with the gallery. \nIn Pivot\, Deborah Dancy presents a new body of paintings that marks a turning point in her practice\, as layered pours of paint replace the brushwork that previously defined much of her approach. Gravity\, movement\, and accumulation guide the formation of each composition\, allowing the works to unfold through a process that embraces fluidity\, chance\, and transformation. \nWhile this direction represents a notable development in Dancy’s practice\, it extends an element long present in her work. Earlier poured ink and paint works on paper now expand onto canvas\, where successive layers of pigment create surfaces that appear to gather\, disperse\, and reconfigure across the picture plane. Veils of color gather and disperse across the surface\, creating luminous fields that shift between depth and atmosphere. Rather than directing the image through deliberate brush marks\, the artist engages a process in which material behavior and intuition interact\, allowing form to emerge through movement\, density\, and transparency. \nThe title Pivot signals a moment of transition within the artist’s ongoing engagement with abstraction and perception. By relinquishing familiar gestures and embracing the unpredictable behavior of poured paint\, Dancy enters a new phase in which the act of painting becomes a fluid exchange between artist\, material\, and chance. The resulting works reward sustained viewing\, as shifting layers of color and light gradually reveal their spatial and atmospheric complexity.\nBorn in 1949 in Bessemer\, Alabama\, and raised in Chicago\, Deborah Dancy is a nationally recognized painter whose abstract works explore perception\, atmosphere\, and the sensory experience of color. She retired in 2017 as Professor Emeritus of Art at the University of Connecticut\, where she taught in the Department of Art and Art History from 1981 to 2017.\nDancy is the recipient of numerous honors\, including a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship\, a National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist Grant administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts\, a Yaddo Fellowship and the American Antiquarian Society’s William Randolph Hearst Fellowship. In 2018\, her work was included in Magnetic Fields: Expanding American Abstraction\, 1960s to Today\, organized by the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and later presented at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.\nHer work is held in major public collections including the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, and the High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, among others.\nOver nearly five decades of practice\, Dancy has developed a distinctive body of work that explores the expressive and perceptual possibilities of abstraction.

SUMMARY:Richard Dial | American Idols
DESCRIPTION:Johnson Lowe Gallery is pleased to announce two new exhibitions opening April 10th\, 2026. \nThe gallery will present American Idols\, an exhibition of sculptures by Richard Dial spanning 2006–2025\, marking the artist’s first solo exhibition with Johnson Lowe Gallery in Atlanta. Known for transforming metal furniture into anthropomorphic forms\, Dial brings together his signature chair works alongside rarely exhibited freestanding figures. The exhibition takes its title from American Idol\, one of two non-chair sculptures on view\, referencing the early-2000s television competition where performance and public judgment shape outcome. \nAcross the exhibition\, Dial’s sculptures articulate a shared language of posture\, pressure\, and presence. The chairs read as bodies\, carrying histories of labor\, family\, and the cultural landscape of the American South\, while the figurative works heighten themes of devotion\, spectacle\, and longing. Together\, these works form a cohesive meditation on visibility and belief\, where steel becomes a conduit for human experience and the conditions that shape it.

SUMMARY:Gommaar Gilliams | Sky Atlas
DESCRIPTION:Johnson Lowe Gallery is pleased to announce two new exhibitions opening April 10th\, 2026. \nThe gallery will present Sky Atlas\, an exhibition of new paintings by Gommaar Gilliams\, marking the artist’s first exhibition with Johnson Lowe Gallery. In this body of work\, Gilliams builds paintings through layered processes that echo the formation of archetypes\, drawing from fables\, myths\, allegories\, and astrological systems where meaning accumulates through return rather than resolution. Surfaces composed of stitched elements\, dense pigment\, and visible corrections hold a sense of time\, as figures such as greyhounds\, birds\, and celestial forms move through the compositions with symbolic resonance. \nGommaar’s painting operates as a form of pre-linguistic storytelling\, where image and material converge to produce works that feel both enduring and unsettled. Gilliams’ compositions balance moments of clarity with ongoing revision\, allowing narrative to remain open and continuously formed. Sky Atlas reflects on the desire for coherence and meaning\, holding that impulse in tension with the understanding that such structures are always provisional.

SUMMARY:Isamu Noguchi: “I am not a designer”
DESCRIPTION:Although Isamu Noguchi declared in 1949\, “I am not a designer\,” the internationally acclaimed artist regularly engaged with the space-shaping possibilities of design\, imagining and producing work in architecture\, industrial design\, ceramics\, furniture\, lighting\, stage sets\, and landscape design. In spring 2026\, the High will debut the artist’s first design retrospective in nearly twenty-five years\, featuring nearly two hundred objects\, many never or rarely exhibited\, spanning all facets of his creative output. \nIsamu Noguchi: “I am not a designer” coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of Playscapes\, a bicentennial gift for the city of Atlanta commissioned by the High in collaboration with the City of Atlanta Parks Department and the only one of Noguchi’s playgrounds built in the United States during his lifetime. \nHighlights of the exhibition will include sculptural models of potential and unrealized projects\, such as the recently rediscovered plaster for Play Mountain (1933); tables and stools designed for manufacturers like Herman Miller and Knoll; and a house model Noguchi designed in collaboration with architect Kazumi Adachi. The exhibition will also feature several large-scale installations\, notably the stage set for choreographer Martha Graham’s Seraphic Dialogue (1955)\, one of Noguchi’s innovative pieces of play equipment\, and a commissioned film capturing some of Noguchi’s site-specific plazas and gardens. The diverse\, interactive presentation will explore works that embrace function to understand Noguchi as a multinational\, interdisciplinary artist and designer who shaped a more open\, inclusive world. After Atlanta\, the exhibition will travel to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem\, Massachusetts (September 19\, 2026–January 3\, 2027) and the Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Rochester in Rochester\, New York (February 13–June 6\, 2027).

SUMMARY:Footwork: Where We Gather
DESCRIPTION:Footwork: Where We Gather joins traditional sports photography with contemporary works by photographer Sheila Pree Bright\, whose new series celebrates Atlanta sports culture and uplifts the community that sport engenders. From United tailgates to the pitch\, Falcons training camp to the stands and abroad\, Pree Bright turns the camera to the fans—and through them\, to the teams they love—finding togetherness and solidarity in the places where sport becomes tradition and fans become family. \nThis exhibition is part of a broader university-wide initiative celebrating Atlanta’s vibrant sports culture as the city prepares to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Through exhibitions\, programs\, and community partnerships\, Emory is exploring how sport fosters identity\, belonging\, and connection—on campus\, across the city\, and around the world.

SUMMARY:Seared
DESCRIPTION:With a savvy restaurant consultant and a waiter with dreams of his own added to the mix – everything starts to ignite in flames in this hilarious and insightful new play that explores what happens when art and money collide. \nAudiences will be up close to the action as the Woodstock Stage is transformed into the intimate kitchen of a New York City restaurant. SEARED is calling you into the kitchen to DISCOVER THE FIRE! \nHarry – a culinary genius with a flare for the dramatic – receives a positive review in a food magazine for his signature scallops and his business partner can see their restaurant finally making money. The catch – Harry refuses to ever make the scallops again. \nSEARED is a play that asks questions we are all deeply familiar with – what happens when the things that feel so intimately personal and our own become something that belongs to everyone? It’s also a play where we explore – intimately- the world of high-stakes cuisine\, and enter into the kitchen for a front-row look. We here at Woodstock Arts are so excited to create a fully functional kitchen onstage for this show and cook a meal for the audience to see\, hear\, and even smell! (We may not have enough portions for everyone to taste\, unfortunately).
