A self-taught experimentalist who lives in rural Tennessee\, he is the author of many books. His bestseller\, The Art of Fermentation\, received a James Beard award\, has been widely translated\, and was selected by the New York Times as one of “The 25 Most Influential Cookbooks From the Last 100 Years.” Sandor’s books\, along with the hundreds of fermentation workshops he has taught around the world\, have helped to catalyze a broad revival of the fermentation arts. For more information\, check out his website www.wildfermentation.com \nAbout the Conversation Partners \nYarrow Koning (they/them) is a queer\, trans\, and non-binary environmental educator\, climate justice organizer\, multimedia storyteller\, and bookseller based in Decatur\, GA. Yarrow holds a Master of Education in Environmental Education from Florida Atlantic University and specializes in education that centers equity\, justice\, queer ecologies\, and multispecies liberation. Alongside their work as a full-time bookseller at Charis Books and More\, Yarrow is the Co-Director and Impact Campaign Coordinator for the Queers 4 Climate Justice documentary Can’t Stop Change: Queer Climate Stories from the Florida Frontlines. In their free time\, Yarrow enjoys hosting queer ecologies outings\, workshops\, and events\, including the monthly Queer Ecologies Book Club at Charis Books and More. \nDr. Julia Skinner is a food writer whose work includes the award-winning book Our Fermented Lives\, and The Fermentation Oracle. Her next book\, Essential Food Preserving\, will be published by Storey publishing in May 2026. She is the founder of The Culinary Curiosity School\, and also runs Root\, a food-focused community and consulting organization offering classes\, consulting on creative projects\, a weekly newsletter\, and more. She’s also the founder of Roots and Branches\, where she coaches other writers to help them find their voice and share their most important work with the world. \nShe is also a nature lover\, a teacher\, and a traveler who firmly believes in finding\, and sharing\, the magic of everyday life. By supporting their work in refugee resettlement\, English literacy\, and career advancement\, we hope to honor the play’s message of finding a sense of belonging and ensuring that everyone\, regardless of where they come from\, has the opportunity to thrive in our local community. \nSYNOPSIS\nIn a remote fishing lodge in rural Georgia\, a pathologically shy man named Charlie seeks a quiet escape from the world. To save him from the strain of conversation\, his friend convinces the local residents that Charlie is a “foreigner” who understands no English. The plan backfires with hilarious results as the lodge’s colorful inhabitants—from a cynical heiress to a scheming preacher—begin to treat Charlie as a silent confidant\, confessing their deepest secrets and dark scandals right to his face. What follows is a high-stakes\, mile-a-minute farce where a man who just wanted to be invisible finds himself the only person capable of saving the day.\n“A comic masterpiece… Shue’s play is a tribute to the power of the human spirit to find a common language\, even when the words are all wrong.” — The New York Times \nCONTENT WARNING\nWhile The Foreigner is a celebrated comedy\, its plot centers on a conflict with a local group motivated by xenophobia and extremism. Our production is committed to exploring these themes with modern intentionality\, specifically focusing on the absurdity of hate while prioritizing the safety of our performers and audience. To ground the conflict in a more recognizable contemporary context\, we will be utilizing a “Proud Boys” aesthetic and physicality for many of the antagonists. In terms of staging\, we plan to use very limited traditional regalia\, supplementing the wardrobe with modern-inspired “inflammatory” costuming (ie: “Proud Boys” references). This approach allows us to clearly identify the threat and the play’s anti-bigotry message without unnecessarily overwhelming the space with historical trauma-based imagery. We are dedicated to maintaining an open dialogue throughout the rehearsal process to ensure a supportive environment for all artists involved. \nWHEELCHAIR ACCESS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE – Our wheelchair elevator is currently out of commission and being serviced.
